Siggraph 2008: The Year of Softimage?

It may be difficult to comprehend now, but it was only two years ago that many in the video game world had given Nintendo up for dead.  Despite the early success of the DS handheld, the company’s Gamecube had finished in distant third vs. its same generation competitors.  And with the next generation of consoles dawning, the XBox 360 was lighting up the charts and the Playstation 3 was about to become reality.  Then at E3 2006, Nintendo unveiled the Wii and the rest is history.

While nothing unveiled at this week’s Siggraph conference in Los Angeles will have that level of mainstream consumer impact, the event may feature a similar underdog story that will have far-reaching consequences for the business of video game development.

Valve continues to impress with every one of its announcements! We heard of Steamworks a few months ago, which has made professional video game publishing within everyone’s free hands. Now Valve announces Steam Cloud, a revolutionary service that will allow you to store savegames and configuration files online; that is, forever.

Windows XP Service Pack 3. There are also new TV-out
features including a bigger range of HD supported
formats.

Reminder: Win XP removed from shelves in June.

Just a friendly reminder that unless you act quickly to buy that copy of Windows XP you’ have always wanted from your local tech store you won’t be able to find it soon. In June Microsoft is pulling the 6 year old operating system from stores to be replaced with just Windows Vista.

Windows 7 still going for 2010, Gates’ statement wrong

Regardless of how much you hate Microsoft Windows, we just know you had that delightful sparkle in your eye when we told you earlier this week that Bill Gates has said that Windows 7 will ship next year. Turns out that is too good be true, and Microsoft is still holding on to the whole “3 years after Vista” charade, meaning that no Windows 7 for you till 2010.
