Acer to start making open-platform consoles

While the console market as of now appears to be dominated by the holy trinity – Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, we’ve been hearing rumours of outsiders such as Apple aspiring to get into the action. Acer appears to have taken interest as well – and it’s going one step further – it will make open-platform consoles, giving game devs more freedom and game players more fun (we think).

“Deadly Creatures” coming for Wii, lets you control a scorpion, tarantula

When was the last time you wished for a game where you can play as a scorpion or a tarantula? I’m guessing it’s ‘never’? Coming from Rainbow Studios for the Wii, Deadly Creatures lets you do just that. And we assure you that when we say ‘scorpion’, we don’t mean scorpion as in Sonic is a hedgehog. We mean a real, killer scorpion.

New Star Wars movie on August 15th, no really!

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

If you thought that the Star Wars line of movies died in 2005, leaving the franchise with games, books and other media – think again. Lucas will be kicking off the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series with a full-fledged theater movie – yes the big sort. It’s titled Star Wars: The Clone Wars and will be an animation feature, much in the vein of the TV series.

Mass Effect confirmed for PC, coming out in MAY!

In a move long rumoured and expected by Bioware fans worldwide, Bioware has announced that it will be making a PC version of Mass Effect. Considering this is their only sci-fi IP, the only original sci-fi RPG in a long time and such, I’m not surprised. I did expect the release date to be in the last quarter or so…

Futuremark enters Gaming Industry as Developer

Continuing today’s series of most unexpected developments in the gaming industry, we have Futuremark entering the gaming industry as a full-fledged video game development studio. Or in short, Futuremark will now be making games. This announcement is, in my opinion exactly as random as the Valve’s “Steamworks” announcement.

For those who are not well-versed with hardware manuals, Futuremark is best-known for 3DMark, a benchmarking tool whose primary purpose is to rank your hardware with shiny numbers so that you can numerically prove that you have a better and more geekier computer set-up than your friends (if you have any). Valve unveils game publication suite “Steamworks”

Valve, the gaming industry legend known for its Half-Life line of games and their revolutionizing “Steam” video game distribution platform has made a surprise announcement and release – Steamworks. Pretty cool name, but sounds too professional for a game, right?

Right. Steamworks is a video game publishing suite, that helps game developers save lots of time and money by giving them lots of instantaneous features, including piracy protection, auto-updating, voice chat and lots more. And all this for free. No money – no currency – no slavery.
