New Comic Books For 1/18/12

Buzz Worthy Books!

Avenging Spider-Man #3 (Marvel Comics)
The Wells/MAD duo’s adventure into big action shots and bigger bad guys rolls along in this issue. While the last two issues have felt brisk I am still slightly entertained by the back and forth dialog between Red Hulk (Rulk) and Spidey. This book feels like the “go big or go home” I used to read when I was only in the single didgets age-wise. Continue reading “New Comic Books For 1/18/12”

New Comic Books For 1/11/12

Are you bored by all of the GOP news? Have no fear! Tomorrow is a new comics Wednesday! The week features a lot of new beginnings as well as some endings, but all in all the week is pretty decent with a number of releases sure to keep you busy into next week.

Buzz Worthy Books!

Avengers 1959 #5 of 5 (Marvel Comics)
The forgotten tale of Nick Fury’s original Avengers team comes to a close as the team confronts ICON. I can’t tell if this is a throw-away story or if the are looking to build something off of it but either way it has been pretty decent all the way through.

Batwoman #5 (DC Comics)
Super-pale Batwoman’s sidekick just kind of gave up her identity to the fuzz in the last issue. Sure, it was on her deathbed but that can’t be good for Batman and all of his other peoples. i dont know what the big deal is. Anyone with two eyes who has ever seen Batwoman once knows that the only other paper-white redhead in Gotham HAS to be her. I really keep giving this story chances since the story is appealing and the art is fun and inventive but her color just kills it for me issue after issue.

Black Panther The Most Dangerous Man Alive #528 (Marvel Comics)
This being the second to last issue of the series, I am kind of sad to see it going. The Black Panther is making his stand against The Kingpin with all sorts of ninjas in the way.

Brilliant #2 (Marvel Comics)
Another Bendis brain-child, this series brings forth a group of smarty pants who use science to make super powers real. It is a good read and Bagley’s art is as consistently fun as it has always been.

Carnage U.S.A. #2 of 5 (Marvel Comics)
Building off the success of the last Carnage mini-series, Marvel has really gone all out for this once prime 90’s character. Last issue he has infected an entire town as well as a few superheroes with his alien suit, now somehow Spider-Man needs to save the day. Yeah, but the art is good at least.

DC Universe Online Legends #21 (DC Comics)
For a book based on an MMO game this is a really damn good story, and is also the ONLY place where you can still see old-style DC Universe characters. The last issue left Batman about to poison all sorts of Aliens because they threaten Earth and the only person to stop him is… Batman? Time-travel!

Grifter #5 (DC Comics)
This is kind of a sleeper book but I tossed it onto this list because of the upcoming DC event featuring the mysterious Daemonites entities battling against the likes of Superman. Grifter is a good series if you are a fan of fugitive stories and with the Daemonites set to make a big splash this is a book that could help you see the origins and prepare for the story.

Incredible Hulk #4 (Marvel Comics)
If you have not been following this series then you seriously have to question your life. So the Hulk and Bruce Banner are now two individuals (again!) but this time Banner really misses Hulk so he is trying to recreate him! With a seemingly endless series of various animals that he transformed, as well as the crazy brain tumor he now has, I want to say this dude has snapped and is now a menace to the world that only the Hulk himself can beat down. Must buy of the week!

Journey Into Mystery #633 (Marvel Comics)
Starting yet another Loki centric story post-Fear Itself, Gillen seems to be making his intentions of where he is bringing both the readers and the character. I did not think I would enjoy this series as much as I do and while some parts are a bit dull it is over-all getting better as all the pieces start to come together.

New Avengers #20 (Marvel Comics)
Avengers are fighting against Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers again as the smallest major Avengers event in 2012 continues along. This issue feels like it will be more or less the same as the last one as we build closer to the finale but although this could be a filler issue clearing out the weeds, it is still important to the important events I predict fo the next issue.

Scarlet Spider #1 (Marvel Comics)
Finding himself to be a hero in a new city that might not want him, the Peter Parker clone must find his own path in this post Spider-Island landscape. I think the main appeal of this new book is the 90’s nostalgia that comes to Spider fans who hear “Scarlet Spider”. While it is Kaine and not the original ben Reilly clone under the mask I still expect big action and fun.

Star War: Knights Of The Old Republic War #1 (Dark Horse Productions)
Just because I do not have a PC does not mean that I cannot find a way to enjoy KOTOR in one form or another. Running alongside the story laid in the game, this comic is designed to be enjoyable to non-players as well as providing a little something extra to those who are looking to get more out of the game’s world and setting. The heavy gamer appeal should hopefully translate to success for Dark Horse.

Transformers More Than Meets Eye #1 (IDW Publishing)
Taking place millions of years in the future, this new squad of Autobots are on the search for hope somewhere in the galaxy that they can call a home after the (re)destruction of Cybertron. Having deeply enjoyed the last run of IDW’s Transformers series that cultivated in Optimus Prime’s end I can fully endorse this book as we see what a post-war and dare I say post-human universe has to share with the robots.

Wolverine #300 (Marvel Comics)
Wolverine is headed to Japan, and no, a stack of caskets does not equal a proper pod hotel. I kid! Wolverine is a good book and I am happy to see Aaron moving away from the depressing Logan and more towards the action that we got back in the Frank Miller days.

X-Men Legacy #260.1 (Marvel Comics)
A new beginning for the book’s cast as Rogue and her posse set up stakes at Wolverine’s Westchester school in their new roles as teachers. As the most underhyped X-Book, I really hope that this series can lure in more fans as we continue to see one of the only appearances that Rogue, Gambit, and Rachel Summers make out of ALL the other X-titles.

New Comics Releases for Wednesday 10/12/2011

As we count down to the 2011 New York Comic Con beginning on Thursday here is a look at the whopping number of amazing books due out this week. There are a lot to chose from so my having to whittle it down to a top ten was a lot harder than usual. Speaking of NYCC, be sure to look out for our coverage of the event this weekend!

Mario’s Top Ten Comic Picks Of the Week!

10) Shade #1 (DC Comics)
Written by JAMES ROBINSON, Art by CULLY HAMNER

James Robinson is back on this character (I guess the JLA appearances don’t count?) and with this I hope to see a door opened to the return of Star Man!

9) PunisherMAX #18 (Marvel Comics)
Written by JASON AARON Art by STEVE DILLON

The fall of Wilson Fisk seems eminent, but it won’t be Frank pulling a “Gustavo” on Fisk, but rather his own ex-wife Vanessa. Aaron has been doing a stellar job on diving into The Punisher in this off-shoot universe, I only hope that all of these stories has a predetermined ending for when he leaves the title.

8 ) Dead Rising Road To Fortune #1 (IDW Publishing)
Written by Tom Waltz, Art by Kenneth Loh

As a huge fan of this game series I am happy to see this comic that promises to bridge the story between when we left Frank at the Mall during the first game, and where we first find Chuck at that gas station in the Xbox 360 exclusive Dead Rising: Case Zero.

7) X-Men Regenesis #1 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Kieron Gillen, Art by Billy Tan

So the X-Men have been split into two different schools of thought, I only hope this story will be enjoyable before we head to the inevitable story where they will stand united again in two or three years. Until then I will be in full force. My decades long love for the X titles knows no bounds.

6) Green Lantern #2 (DC Comics)
Written by Geoff Johns, Art by Doug Mahnke

Sinestro going up against the Sinestro Corp for one reason or another. They are just following YOUR orders, bro. The opening arc of the new DCU continues to plug along but when will Hal get his damn ring back?

5) Batgirl #2 (DC Comics)
Written by Gail Simone, Art by Ardian Syaf

Hopefully this issue has an answer as to why Batgirl is walking again. The last issue was good but if this fails to grasp me I do not think I will stay past the first arc.

4) Who Is Jake Ellis #5 (Image Comics)
Written by NATHAN EDMONDSON, Art by TONCI ZONJIC

The final chapter in what I like to call Fight Club meets James Bond, this was one of those indy books featuring a creative team I have never heard of but I am sure glad that I picked it up. If you miss out on this please be sure to check out the trade as this is a “don’t miss” series.

3) Ultimate Comics X-Men #2 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Nick Spencer, Aart by Paco Medina & Juan Vlasco

Oh no! Mutants were made by the US government and now the world gets us for yet another thing! Also, I wonder what the Human Torch feels about this since he is a human. Does he slowly walk away when the topic arises? I need to see more on this.

2) Joe Hill’s The Cape #2 (IDW Publishing)
Written by Joe Hill & Jason Ciaramella, Art by Zach Howard

It is not always the good guys that get powers, sometimes straight up dickheads get them too. In a world not too different from ours, the only super powered being just happens to be a vengeful blame-others-first sociopath and I love it.

1) Pigs #2 (Image Comics)
Written by Nate Crosby & Ben McCool, Art by Breno Temura & Chris Sotomayor

Issue one of this amazing story took me by surprise, but I will NOT sleep on this issue. For those of you who do not know, this series is about a new generation of Soviet sleepers that have been waiting since the Cold War for their orders to come, and now that they have the fall of America is at hand. Top notch pacing and amazing characteristics make this my must read book of the week.

New Comics On Sale 9/7/11

Welcome to another listing of this week’s comic books due to be in stores on Wednesday. The DC Universe backs up a truck full of number ones and Dynamite Entertainment brings a whopping number of awesome issues this week. Here is a full list of what was released last week as well as a handful of reviews. Feel free to leave a comment below with what you are excited to see.

Mario’s Top Ten Picks

10) Terminator/Robocop Kill Human #2 of 4 (Dynamite Entertainment)
Written by Rob Williams, Art by PJ Holden

The last human in the area is dead, now it’s time for the robots to fight! This is another one of those wonderfully high concept series that couldn’t quite get out of the gate in Hollywood that Dynamite turned one executive’s trash into a genre fanboy’s gold! Fans of either series will hopefully be pleased with the result.

9) Big Lie #1 (Image Comics)
Story by Rick Veitch

If you could go back in time to stop 9/11, would you? More importantly, would people believe you? Veitch explores that concept as well as many of the more colorful theories in this well crafted one-shot celebrating the tenth anniversary of the dreadful attacks that scarred my home town and sent our nation down a new path. Some people might find this distasteful but I like to keep an open mind, plus some of the best 9/11 tales came in the form of comics.

8 ) The Boys #58 (Dynamite Entertainment)
Written by Garth Ennis, Art by Russ Braun

The Boys’ war against The Seven continues to built to its inevitable climax in this semi-serious iniquitous parody of the entire mainstream superhero genre. While some arcs are not as entertaining as others this one is looking to be great as all the pieces begin to fall into place for the series to begin it’s final phase before the end.

7) Action Comics #1 (DC Comics)
Written by Grant Morrison, Art by Rags Morales

A short sleeve tee shirt and jeans? Superman really is from Kansas, isn’t he? Morrison is an odd guy when it comes to his writing style but I really hope he doesn’t try to do some high brow, multifaceted epic like we saw in All-Star Superman and he just delivers one hell of an entertaining story that the majority can enjoy.

6) True Blood: The French Quarter #1 (IDW Publishing)
Written by Mariah Huehner & David Tischman, Art by David Messina

I do not hide my love for True Blood. Although I have not read the novels I can say that I am as big of a fan of what Alan Ball has brought to the HBO as any fanatic out there. This is the third comic series that IDW has presented in conjunction with the creative team behind the TV show and while it may not be a direct crossover it is a fun companion to the series. Expanding on the universe set by the show, we finally get to see a little more of New Orleans beginning in this issue. I wonder if we’ll see Tara’s Lady MMA club?

5) X-Factor #224.1 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Peter David, Art by Valentine DeLandro

Another of Marvel’s “Point One” issues intended to bring in new readers, PAD has built up his own little tree house in the corner of the X-Men books into a full on fort of awesomeness. In the shadow of the upcoming Regenesis, X-Factor Investigations looks to be in store for a makeover in the form of new characters and this issue could contain a few hints of what direction the series may take.

4) Cobra #4 (IDW Publishing)
Written by Mike Costa, Art by Antonio Fuso

The body count continues to rise as the competition over who can kill the most Joes rages on. The prize? Title of Cobra Commander! This is not the GI Joe of yesteryear and I am grateful for this shot in the arm reboot intended to bring in a new fan base. I will be honest, I prefer this title to the Flagship Joe book but I have a type of bias for the bad guys that is usually only reserved for News Corp. I expect big fun from this issue.

3) Red Skull #3 of 5 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Greg Pak, Art by Mirko Colak

Journeying back to Nazi Germany, this series continues to entertain as we see the birth of a monster. The way the last issue ended I really thought we were going to see Johan take a different route until his true sefish nature reared its ugly head. Look for more of the same amazing character moments as we build up to the man who would be known as The Red Skull.

2) New Avengers Annual #1 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Brian Michael Bendis, Art & Cover by Gabriele Dell’Otto

How many years has Bendis held the monopoly on The Avengers now? Does it matter? I look forward to the re-return of Wonder Man as well as the big style that Dell’otto brings. If Marvel is putting both of these creators on one issue then we are in store for something big regardless if it has long last effects or not.

1) Batgirl #1
Written by Gail Simone, Art by Ardian Syaf

So Barbara Gordon is Batgirl again? This I have to see. Others have said that the story is done in a way that makes sense since she was still wheelchair bound due to The Joker’s bullet but I think I need to see it with my own eyes. Gail Simone is consistently a good writer and this is her favorite character so I doubt it would be rubbish, in fact that is why this issue has earned the top spot of my picks. I expect big action and big character moments followed by the typical cliffhanger of an opening issue.

New Comic Releases for Wednesday 8/31/11

As the DC Universe both comes to a close and begins a new and Marvel unleashes an infestation of spiders onto Manhattan another Wednesday is almost upon us and it is heralded by a list of everything that is scheduled to arrive on sale at your local comic shop this week. Also, click here for a list of last week’s releases and reviews.

NOTE: Because of Hurricane Irene certain stores may not receive their scheduled inventory by Wednesday.

Mario’s Picks Of The Week!

10) INVINCIBLE #82  (Image Comics)
Written by Robert Kirkman, Art by Ryan Ottley

After the Dino adventure, look to this issue to be a bridge or down time leading into the next story. Still one of my favorite and most consistently entertaining comic series, Invincible is big time fun for those into kick ass superheroes without the baggage of a massive shared universe.

9) ULTIMATE COMICS HAWKEYE #1 OF 4 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Jonathan Hickman, Art by Rafa Sandoval

Yet another Ultimate Comics relaunch title, this is Hawkeye’s first solo adventure. I look forward to an action adventure for the Ultimates’ premier marksman. If you picked up last week’s Ultimate #1, also by Hickman, then expect to see at least a little crossover.

8 ) WARLORD OF MARS FALL OF BARSOOM #2 (Dynamite Entertainment)
Written by Robert Place Napton, Art by Roberto Castro

After seeing the trailers for the upcoming Disney movie of the same franchise staring former Dillon Panther, Tim Riggins, I have developed an interest in the character and I hope that this series will turn my curiosity into a desire to see more.

7) HAUNT #17 (Image Comics)
Written by Robert Kirkman, Art by Greg Capullo

As Kirkman wraps up his run on this mildly supernatural shoot ’em up book, look to see loose ends wrapped up and more unraveled as we segway into the next creative team. Seriously though, this book reminded me of the old 90’s comics I used to read where guns and tits rules all, but that could just be the art direction since the story is HEAVY on a bond between brothers.

6) SECRET AVENGERS #16 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Nick Spencer, Art by Jamie McKelvie

Comics wunderkind Nick Spencer unleashes yet another new comic this month as his run on Secret Avengers hopefully hits its stride. I once called him the “Lil Wayne of comics” in that he seems to be on everything that is hitting in the shelves and I hope that this does not burn him out. Coming out of Fear Itself, this issue hopefully picks up on something new for the Avengers’ covert team.

5) VESCELL #1 (Image Comics)
Written by Enrique Carrion, Art by John Upchurch

Another new series, this is something that has been described as a “techno noir” story. The concept is about people transferring their minds and spirits into other bodies in a crime story. I am always interested in trying new things and this looks like a fun, high concept book.

4) UNCANNY X-FORCE #14 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Rick Remender, Art by Jerome Opena

Back from the Age of Apocalypse, the heroes have the life seed and need to give it to Angel whether he wants it or not. I have high hopes for the next chapter in the “Dark Angel Saga” and if the teasers that Marvel released are to be believed we will see a new teammate out of this at the very least.

3) AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #668 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Dan Slott, Art by Humberto Ramos

The last issue ended with Spidey on the business end of an Avengers beat down. Sure, they thought he was one of the countless others that had spider powers and rocking one of his many uniforms, but an ass kicking is an ass kicking. I want to see how Mr. Parker comes back from that… I am sure it’ll make Christmas a bit awkward in the old Avengers Manor.

2) HERC #6.1 (Marvel Comics)
Written by Fred Van Lente & Greg Pak, Art by Mike Grell

Is Brooklyn in the house? Here we have another reader friendly Point One jumping on issue from Marvel, but this time focusing on the Greenpoint Guardian, Hercules! As much as I love a huge Greek bro dressed in green protecting my home town (Metropolitan & Lorimer REPRESENT!) FVL & Pak are a duo at just smashing out hit after hit and this book deserves more readers and if it doesn’t get them I predict it could go to the chopping block before issue 20. The action is fun and light, the dialog is pretty witty, and the references to other Marvel Universe happenings are fleeting if they are there at all. In other words, it is a damn good book for the causal reader.

1) TIE!!! JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 AND FLASHPOINT #5 OF 5 (DC Comics)
JLA: Written by Geoff Johns, Art by Jim Lee
Flashpoint: Written by Geoff Johns, Art by Adam Kubert

This is it kids! The alpha and omega of the DC Universe is upon us! What happens in Flashpoint that sets resets the DC Universe? What happened five years ago that the first Justice League arc is a flashback to the new first meeting? All of the questions will be answered in part in just a few short days! And with a special midnight launch of these books in NYC at Midtown Comics hosted by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee you can bet that all of the hype will have fans talking one way or the other.

Here is a look at EVERYTHING that is scheduled for 8/31/11 release.
