Sony going for Venom spinoff?

Venom

Looks like it’s weird-movie-announcement week. Sony has decided to go ahead with a spinoff of Venom, one of Spiderman’s better enemies. For those (especially those who hate the moviezation of Spiderman) who haven’t seen Spider-Man 3, Venom is a shape-shifting symbiote that requires a host DNA to perform, or some such stuff.

In any case, I like Venom better than Doc Ock or Green Goblin or the rest of that nonsense. Then again, Venom is Spiderman’s archenemy, which means that he is to Spiderman what The Joker is to Batman or what Lex Luthor is to Superman or Elmer Fudd is to Bugs Bunny and so on. And from the Spiderman rogue gallery, I’d say Venom is the only one who can make for a badass movie.

With a Spiderman sequel nowhere in sight, it seems that Sony is trying to use a spinoff to garner some extra attention to the franchise. Fox is doing something similar with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a prequel that will be the origin story for Wolverine. With a similar treatment on Magneto in the works, it looks like spinoffs are in fashion.

Back to the movie, Jacob Estes has been comissioned to create a script for the movie. Topher Grace, who played Venom in Spider-Man 3 will most likely not be back this time, as Sony is not sure if he can hold up an entire movie by himself. Fair enough.

What do you think of this move? Will spinoffs be good? Can you picture a whole movie on Venom? Is this superhero movie madness a good thing?

David Jaffe: Marvel games need story; I agree

Spider-man!

David Jaffe may not be a household name, but just so you know, he’s the genius designer behind the Twisted Metal series for the Playstation and is also known for God of War. On his blog over here, he was seen criticising the guys who make games for Marvel’s movies and their comics, too maybe. Now that he mentions it, who makes those games anyways?

Man speaks the truth as he opens his blog post with the following lines:

Please stop putting Spiderman games in big open sandbox environments where you swing around and do oh so slight variations on 4 pretty dull mission types (chase/race/collect/etc) and then once in a while toss in a boss fight and/or a somewhat unique mission.

I mean seriously, we get the point: we get to swing around and stuff, but please; more emphasis on the stuff and less on the goddamn swinging.

Jaffe demands that Marvel’s comics are ace, but the games are terrible and the biggest problem here is that they are “POWER-BASED” and not “STORY-BASED”. Marvel’s comics are known for their great stories and scripts, as he mentions the big man Stan himself. You’d wish the games would follow suit, but they have to be ridiculous affairs that throw you into this huge story with repititive missions and lack of any sort of direction whatsoever.

Superhero movie overload?

Overload is a somewhat overused term. For most it just it used in relation to information overload but perhaps superhero overload is the newest use. Since the late 90’s CGI has been to such a high quality that we can have comic book superheroes translated to the big screen given a big enough budget.

Tony Stark in Incredible Hulk scene

Our dear friend Tony has been getting around a lot these days. I guess anyone can afford that when you’re a multi-billionaire. Tony Stark aka Iron Man is in The Incredible Hulk. Yes if this is a spoiler to you, then you obviously haven’t seen the film. Well I haven’t seen the film, but I heard about it with the net-vines.

Of course StuffWeLike went scowering across the webs for any related video to bring to you loyal readers and of course we succeeded.

Unlike our previous Samuel L. Jackson video in Iron Man, hopefully this Tony Stark video won’t have to be taken offline. It seems as if this video is an official trailer. If it ain’t it’ll probably have to be taken down. So watch it while you can.

If this isn’t an incentive to go watch The Incredible Hulk, I don’t know what is.
