The Worst Films of 2008: An American Carol Falls Flat; W. Fails Audiences

Political films are a tough sell in this day and age. Whether it’s the overwhelming disappointment in the past eight years of the Bush administration, or the state of the economy, Democrats and Republicans would much rather see Batman or Indiana Jones than politics on the big screen.

Two films released in 2008 attempted to utilize politics as a means to their end. Sadly, both of their ends were tragic, as were their overall usefulness in the dialogue of American political cinema. Continue reading “The Worst Films of 2008: An American Carol Falls Flat; W. Fails Audiences”

Ghostbusters The Video Game – Please God Don’t Let This Game Suck

Every now and then there is a video game trailer that brings a glimmer of hope. Usually soon after, this hope gets crushed. For instance, when the Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts teaser trailer was released fanboys went wild. A couple months later, Rare shot them in the foot announcing it was a vehicular title rather than a simple platform.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game definitely falls into this category. On paper it seems fantastic. In final form, it usually is a stinker. When Vivendi merged with Activision and Activision dropped the title from its publishing lineup, a red flag warning went up. This title might not be so good.

I am grateful that Atari is planning on publishing this game. It would have been a shame to see all this time and effort by the original actors go to waste. From the new trailer [see below] it appears that at least the cutscenes will live up to the film’s comedic and fun adventure qualities.

Please Atari, take all the time and money that you need to make this title AAA.

PS – Please find a new announcer. The voice actor in this trailer kind of sucks.

TiVo Guilt?

Bad TiVo, bad. Apparently by now everyone knows what a TiVo is. They might not know what a DVR is, but they sure by golly know what a TiVo is. Sadly, there still needs to be some education on TiVo. It’s a pandemic.

With over 3 million subscribers TiVo is causing its valued costumers many heartwrenching moments. Does this sound like you: I’m running out of harddrive space, should I watch and then delete House or American Idol?

The truth is that you shouldn’t have to do either. What TiVo needs to do is sell a separate external harddrive storage unit. Then users could gracefully save their favorite shows for later viewing without feeling obligated to watch them. This is the new term that people are called the ‘TiVo Guilt.’

Sure there are plenty of third party modifications that one can install on their TiVo. Mostly all will obliterate your warranty.

Thanks TiVo for bringing joy to my life and others, but I know that you can do better. I don’t want to order pizza from you. I simply want a better viewing experience than what my cable operator provides. Don’t lose focus on your potential. Be all that you can be.

Widescreen becomes Default to YouTube – The Change Begins Now

[UPDATE 12/4/08: YouTube has now enabled Widescreen embeds.]

YouTube has officially switched from the default 4:3 ratio to a 16:9 ratio for videos playing on their website. This is definitely great for future web video content. Now there’s a reason to upload videos in 16:9 ratio. Obviously there’s a difference between 16:9 and true high definition, but YouTube is taking it one step at a time.

In the past, YouTube’s user generated videos and professionally produced videos looked practically identical. We’re finally getting to the point where we may see a rift occur between these user generated content and professional content. When YouTube began, it didn’t matter what quality you uploaded the video at because it looked like crap. Earlier in the year, YouTube enabled high quality video streams and now that it has defaulted to a widescreen display, there is a reason for content producers to actually care about the visual quality of their footage!

This will only help the internet web video industry as a whole. If there has been one reason why advertisers have been hesitant to step into the web video market, it has been because a lot of web video shows don’t look and feel like a traditional TV show. By having YouTube, the king website for web videos, shift their focus from low resolution videos to high resolution videos, the web video industry will grow and evolve.

This is a big day for not only web video content producers, but consumers as well. We’re finally getting to the point where quality matters.

The Mojave Experiment

People can be easily persuaded by others. I mean lets face it, why would you be reading this if you didn’t want my thoughts and opinion?

For a long time now, Apple has been giving Microsoft a run for its money with an amazing PR campaign. I’d imagine that everyone reading this right now has seen the Mac vs. PC commercials. Sometime after Windows Vista came out, Apple started airing commercials that smeared Vista for crashing and not being secure.

I’ve been using Windows Vista since it came out and while I have had issues with the operating software at times, it is a big improvement over previous Windows platforms.

Microsoft has come up with a way to ‘fight’ back against the bad rep Vista received in its earlier days with The Mojave Experiment. The website claims that these are all ‘regular people’ who don’t like Windows Vista, but who have also never used it.They are given copies of Microsoft’s newest operating system codenamed Mojave, while in reality it’s simply a copy of Windows Vista.

Obviously the website shows people who actually enjoy Mojave, and then are revealed that it’s just Vista.

Even if these people are paid actors, not saying that they are, it’s a great experiment. It goes to remind everyone, that you have to be wary of the source that you’re receiving information from. Remember that the best source for information is you. Only you can decide if something is good or bad. Please don’t be ignorant and base a judgment on something before you’ve actually tried it out.

And with that in mind, enjoy your weekend!

E3 2008 Show Floor Highlights

E3 wouldn’t be one of the best video game conventions around if it wasn’t for the show floor. The show floor allows attendees to experience the video games they had only once heard about.

So how did this year’s show floor stack up?

Not that well. If I actually rated it, I would say F. Yes I FAILED the show floor. Most game companies had their own private showings with exclusive demos, which made the actual show floor pointless. That’s not to say there weren’t interesting games.
