Japan to build Huge Gigantor statue

Gigantor!

Kobe in Japan is going to be the home of a massive Gigantor statue! The hulking figure will be 18 feet tall and 70 tons heavy to boot. Estimated cost: ¥135 million, which makes about $1.09 million. Those Japs sure have lots of money!

Kobe will also simultaneously commemorate the life of Mitsuteru Yokoyama, the creator of the original Gigantor manga series. Gigantor then appeared in a 1963 anime series and in 2005, in live-action! The movie was made in Japan, which is probably why I’ve never heard of it.

Regardless, the might of Gigantor shall finally manifest itself as a great statue!

Big-time Iraqi cleric loves video games!

Muqdata al-Sadr is a famous Iraqi Shi’ite cleric and has a rather radical personality to boot. He’s well known for criticizing the American presence in Iraq, but apparently he has another passion. Playing video games.

In the July 9 issue of Time, Joe Klein writes One Last Chance, a report on U.S. General David Petraeus and the situation of the “surge” by American forces. Here, writes:

But the most important man in Iraq is the other Shi’ite prince, Muqtada al Sadr, who is 33 and the nominal leader of the most powerful militia in the country, the Mahdi Army. Al-Sadr is often called mercurial – he’s supposedly a fervent video game player – …

I wonder what side he picks in Counter-Strike…

Tomb Raider Anniversary going episodic on 360

tombraidann.jpg

Eidos Interactive has announced that their upcoming game, Tomb Raider: Anniversary will be the first ever full retail game to be serialized through Xbox Live Marketplace. The game will be split into four episodes, with episodes 1 & 2 available in September, and episodes 3 & 4 following “shortly afterwards”. All the episodes will total 2400 Live points, which I think equals $30? Stupid point system.

You know there’s a catch, though. The episodes will require the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Legend disc to play, so this nifty little distribution is only for owners of the previous Xbox 360 title. D’oh! Happily, a full retail version of the game is planned for later in the year, just in case you didn’t buy that steaming pile of crap that was Legend. Read on for the full press release.

Ash Gets Groovy in the Marvel Universe

mzvsaod1reprint.jpg

Hey everybody. It’s me, Todd. I am writing what will hopefully be the first of many articles on this Mecca of a website. Something occurred to me recently: Geeks and Nerds like comics. Why isn’t there comic coverage on the site? Is it because David doesn’t like Superman, Batman or The Legend of Zelda? No. It is merely that I have not yet been born. But I have.

So, what’s a good read these days? Well, a recent personal favorite of mine has been the combination of three of the sweetest things on Earth: Bruce Campbell, Marvel Superheroes and Zombies. “Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness” pits Ash and his trusty chainsaw against classic heroes like Spider-Man and Wolverine. Of course the heroes are in zombie form, and hungry for flesh, so there’s no reason to get upset over them being killed. That was a crappy sentence. I wish I could word it better but who has time? Anyways, Ash goes around trying to save the world from the diseased heroes with the help of non infected super vixens, Dazzler and Scarlet Witch. The first 3 issues have been a good read, with such shocking events as, Donald Duck being blown away by a shotgun and Ash walking down a sidewalk. So if you get the chance pick one up today. It may be the single best comic ever created. By humans.

And remember:
Always cut away from yourself.

The New Kid on the Block

Hello, everyone. My name is Blake Elens and I am the newest blog writer for Stuff We Like. Few of you might remember me from the older versions of SWL, where I was a writer for the movies and video games pages. For those who don’t know who I am, let me tell you a little about myself.

As previously stated, my name is Blake Elens. I am 18 years old and I reside in Pensacola, Florida. I am a freshman at Pensacola Junior College, where I am majoring in Computer Science, and I plan on attending the University of Florida after next year. I am the Crew Trainer for a local McDonald’s restaurant, where I have been working for 3 months. I play baseball, basketball, and football recreationally with my friends and my hobbies include movies, video games, and computers. As far as family goes, I am the youngest of three children, 1 brother and 1 sister, and I live with both my parents.

Well, that’s pretty much me in a nutshell. I look forward to working for SWL again and I hope my contributions will positively affect this website’s success.
