Well, it was bound to happen. With Anchorman 2 in pre-production (awesome!), a recent announcement about another Bill & Ted movie (hmmm…), and the news about a Twins sequel (pass), and rumors of a fourth Austin Powers (???), the Farrelly brothers have decided that its time for more Harry and Lloyd to gross-out movie audiences in Dumb and Dumber 2.
That’s right. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels would reprise their roles once again as the bumbling twosome for yet another madcap adventure surely filled with plenty of zany toilet humor. And with the recent track record of the Farrelly brothers at the box office and imminent disaster that will be their reinvention of The Three Stooges, it’s no surprise they’re returning to the material that put them on the comedy map in the first place.
They are set to begin shooting the sequel in September.
But Dumb and Dumber 2 seems to be just another in a new trend of sequels that look less like great ideas and more like desperation. Most of these proposed sequels star actors who have not have the greatest run at the box office recently (Keanu Reeves, Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers), so returning to this familiar ground is perhaps a way to remind audiences of their former glory.
It’s an interesting trend that does seem to be gaining plenty of traction. I’m curious to see which of these sequels does well and which ones just come and go without much fanfare.
As much as I love Dumb and Dumber, I’m still hesitant about a sequel even if it does have the original leads. Granted, the prequel wasn’t exactly a welcome return for these two characters (considering that no one from the first one was involved), but perhaps there could be some redemption with the collaborative efforts of the Farrelly’s, Carrey, and Daniels. We’ll just have to wait and see.
So, is the announcement of Dumb and Dumber 2 a great idea, or another sign that Hollywood is afraid to try new ideas? Which sequel are you most looking forward to? Leave a comment and let us know!
