DVD REVIEW: Sabrina (1954)

Audrey Hepburn plays the role of Sabrina, the Larrabee’s Chauffeur’s daughter. Sabrina has been in love with David Larrabee, a young playboy, for as long as she could remember. After a trip to Paris for culinary school, Sabrina comes back looking like a beautiful, elegant, and sophisticated lady rather than a girl stalking David from the trees.

Catching David’s attention, he falls in love with her, forgetting about his fiancé and the 20 million dollar sugarcane and plastic deal. So Humphrey Bogart, who plays Linus, decides to try to entice Sabrina out of leaving with David, but apparently Linus ends up falling in love with Sabrina but it is hard to notice.

This movie has poor acting and a weak plot. It’s like Cinderella but with a father, and she doesn’t have until midnight. I found Sabrina to be a psycho. She has been in love with this man for over 10 years and he doesn’t notice her. I especially felt this way after she tried to commit suicide in the garage by carbon monoxide poisoning, because he didn’t love her.

I believe this was a horrible role for Audrey Hepburn to play; maybe she was blackmailed into this movie because while some may think it’s a classic, I believe Paramount wasted a horrible amount of money to produce this garbage without a likeable storyline. I cannot emphasize how horrible the acting is. While it may have been the script, I could not tell if Linus or David, loved her, loathed her, or was just drunk.

If I were you I would pass on this movie. It was two hours that I could have spent studying! (But not really). Well I would advise you to check out Witness of the Prosecution if you are in for a good black and white flick.

DVD REVIEW: Tropic Thunder

All right lets cut the obvious, if you haven’t seen Tropic Thunder yet you missed out on one of the greatest summer comedies since Superbad. HOWEVER unlike Superbad this DVD does give you a chance to redeem your self.

If you buy purchasing the Director’s Cut DVD you will get about 30 minutes more footage than the theatrical “R” rated version. You also get access to an entire separate disk of bonus material with sweet featurettes like how they blew stuff up, extended and deleted scenes; and of course an alternate ending.

You also can see the entire “Rain Of Madness” series, that is the fake documentary about Tropic Thunder. Most of the episodes never made it on to iTunes, but it’s definitely worth a look if you enjoyed the movie or you simply have some time to spend laughing.

To keep it simple, this DVD is a great delight to a hysterical summer blockbuster. If you saw the movie over the summer, and laughed; pick up the DVD and get ready to hold your guts in, before you explode of laughter. If you never went out to see what the Thunder was all about, you owe it to yourself to quickly buy the DVD and experience this great satire!

Blue Dragon (Vol. 1)

Blue Dragon began as a video game for the Xbox 360 that was supposed to usher in Japanese gamers to the console. The franchise has now expanded to a TV show with characters designed by Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon-Ball Z.

The story follows a group of six friends as they attempt to stop an evil entity using their new ally, a legendary shadow monster- the Blue Dragon.

This disc is volume one in the series, and contains the first five episodes. Thankfully it has an MSRP price of $14.99 because there isn’t anything else on these discs.

If you’re a fan of the video game or of anime, I would definitely give Blue Dragon a look-see. However if you’re not, don’t bother.

DVD REVIEW: Popeye the Sailor (Vol. 3) – 1941-1943

All that he is, is awesome. The Popeye cartoons have always made for great fun since their days in the dawn of animation. Most stories are heroic narratives- personally, I know many a screenwriting professors who have been known to show their students a Popeye cartoon as an example of an excellent narrative.

This is a nostalgia DVD collection, and great fun for those of us who grew up with Popeye. It features 32 memorable cartoons.

And if you want to introduce the children in your life to ol’ Popeye, I think this DVD would do the trick, hands down. Despite the fact that these early features are in black and white, they are packed with so much action and adventure that kids will see past it.

So get ready to set sail with the world’s most famous sailor who isn’t a duck, and check out Popeye today.

I give this dvd set five out of five Cans of Vegetables.
