Excuse me miss, would you like a chocolate bar?
Valentine’s Day has passed and so has April Fool’s Day. But I ain’t pull’in your leg when I tell you that a survey conducted by Infosecurity Europe of 576 office workers found that women were far more likely to give away their computer passwords to total strangers masquerading as market researches in exchange for a chocolate bar as an incentive for filling in a survey.
The survey was part of a social engineering exercise to raise awareness about information security. It was conducted outside Liverpool Street Station in the City of London.
This year’s survey results were significantly better than in previous years. In 2007 64% of people were prepared to give away their passwords for a chocolate bar, this year it had dropped to just 21%.
The researchers also asked the office workers for their dates of birth to validate that they had carried out the survey – 61% revealed their date of birth. Another slightly worrying fact discovered by researchers was that over half the people questioned use the same password for EVERYTHING (ATM banking, Internet, etc.).
Workers were also asked about their use of passwords at work, half said that they knew their colleagues passwords and when asked if they would give their passwords to someone who phoned and said they were from the IT department, 58% said they would. .
“This research shows that it’s pretty simple for a perpetrator to gain access to information that is restricted by having a chat around the coffee machine or pretending to be from the IT department,” said Claire Sellick, Event Director, Infosecurity Europe. “This type of social engineering technique is often used by hackers targeting a specific organization with valuable data or assets such as a government department or a bank.”
The survey was carried out as part of the run up to Information Security Awareness week which starts on the 21st April.
So everyone, moral of the story is, don’t give away your password to ANYONE, don’t use the same password and guys, next time you want, ugh, a little something from your girlfriend, offer her a chocolate bar.
Don’t want to catch a virus? Stay away from Internet!
Online security specialist Symantec Corporation, creator of virus stopper Norton this past week published “Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR), Volume XIII” which reports the world is now home to more than one million malicious viruses, worms and Trojans — or malware as they are referred to.
The report also states online users can increasingly be infected simply by visiting everyday Web sites.
Overall, in 2007, Symantec detected 711,912 new threats compared to 125,243 in 2006 – an increase of 468 percent; this brings the total number of malicious code threats detected by Symantec to 1,122,311 as of the end of 2007.
The report is derived from data collected by millions of Internet sensors, first-hand research and active monitoring of hacker communications and provides a global view of the state of Internet security.
In the past, users had to visit intentionally malicious sites or click on malicious email attachments to become a victim of a security threat. Today, hackers are compromising legitimate Web sites and using them as a distribution medium to attack home and enterprise computers. Symantec noticed that attackers are particularly targeting sites that are likely to be trusted by end users, such as social networking sites.

Brazil bans Rockstar’s Bully
Rockstar Games, famous for juggling controversy and bans has just received yet another ban to its name. This time it’s Brazil, who have banned Bully. While the game escapes with an easy T rating from the ESRB, the Brazilian judge responsible for the banning claims that it is far too violent for children and teenagers, especially considering it is set in and all about a school.
As of this writing, Rockstar was unavailable for comment (their spokesman supposedly didn’t know of the ban)
There you go. After weeks of bitter fighting to get its beloved Manhunt 2 unbanned from the United Kingdom, Rocksar got its Bully banned in Brazil. Wonderful.

Michael Bay, Eli Roth respond to Uwe Boll; can get ugly
Uwe Boll’s hateful video that faced heavy YouTube competition from teenage rants has apparently not gone very unnoticed. Michael Bay responded on his official forum, saying:
I find people who rant like that – calling shit about both me, and George Clooney – comes from someone screaming because he is not being heard. He is obviously a sad being.
When you ask “do I care”? Not in the slightest.

Eli Roth, also insulted by Boll has supposedly responded saying that it was the “greatest compliment ever”. No news available about George Clooney, also insulted in a German accent.
When will this war of words between Hollywood’s most annoying directors end?!
