The Shadow #1 Comic Book Review

The Shadow #1 Dynamite Entertainment

The Shadow is just one of those characters that I’ve been waiting years to see a revival of. The most recently released products were simply reprints of the pulp series and before that it was items related to the 1994 film. In 2006 we were given hope that The Shadow would be coming back as it was announced that a new film version of The Shadow was being worked on, but that was six years ago and we still have yet to hear any concrete updates regarding that project.

So last year in August Dynamite Entertainment announced that they would be creating a new comic book series based on The Shadow. Obviously this is a big deal for fans of The Shadow. Continue reading “The Shadow #1 Comic Book Review”

Dynamite Entertainment Ressurects FLASH GORDON!

The iconic legend Flash Gordon is making his dynamic splash back into comics with Dynamite Entertainment this November! Flash Gordon – Zeitgeist #1 is written by Eric Trautmann (Vampirella, Red Sonja), from a story and designs by Alex Ross (Project: Superpowers, Kingdom Come, Marvels), and illustrated by Daniel Lindro!

As Flash Gordon’s story begins, it is a time of two-fisted swashbuckling, of fearsome threats and wild adventure-and of ever-growing threats on the horizon. Three valiant humans — Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov — are plucked from the Earth, traveling to the distant planet Mongo. Their exploits are legendary, battling the machinations and terror schemes of the dreaded emperor Ming, the All-Seeing Ruler of Mongo. But they did not fight alone! And coming up, witness a startling meeting with Ming the Merciless! With the fate of our world helpless, can even Flash Gordon save us?

Alex Ross had this to say about Flash Gordon – Zeitgeist, “Finally, after all this time, I’m working on a Flash Gordon series that brings the best I have to contribute to this legendary character and forerunner of all comic books!”

“I couldn’t be happier about this project,” stated writer Eric Trautmann. “It is a genuine treat to be able to let my inner ‘pulpster’ out, and write in an idiom I rarely get to play in, which has a rich core of optimism and innocence. We’re very much approaching the comic as if it were the Flash Gordon movie we’d all want to see. Add to that, I’ve adored Flash Gordon for as long as I’ve been reading, and the opportunity to play with Alex Raymond’s material — in a way I don’t think has been done before — is truly exciting. The Raymond strips were just so plot-dense, with a sense of ‘anything goes’ that I look for — often unsuccessfully — in contemporary comics. And, of course, several times a week, I check my e-mail, and find a dozen amazing pieces of artwork from Alex Ross; I’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has a greater understanding of the characters, or who harbors more affection for them, than Alex. He has laser-like clarity about the look and feel of the characters, the setting, the story, technology, making it all look new, and at the same time quite familiar. He’s an exceptional ‘vision holder’ for our tale.”

“Dynamite has added another classic character to our growing library of comics,” says Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. “Eric has put together an amazing story and all Flash Gordon fans will fall in love with this book, just as I have!”

Dynamite Entertainment is definitely on a roll this year with only a couple weeks ago announcing that they are working on The Shadow and The Spider comic books.

Dynamite Entertainment Resurrects The Spider

Dynamite Entertainment is pleased to announce the upcoming publication of another classic character, The Spider! The Spider will be written by acclaimed comics writer and novelist (Man Without Fear: Black Panther/The Ethical Assassin), David Liss!

“Pulp fiction is full of big characters, but few come bigger than the Spider – a rugged, daring, self-sacrificing character who would take any risk to face down enemies of New York and the nation,” says writer David Liss. “And what enemies they were. The villains that filled the pages of the Spider killed thousands, destroyed whole portions of the city, infected people by the hundreds, released vermin, hypnotized, zombified and otherwise transformed anyone who came into their path. Partly it’s the sheer scale of the Spider’s world that makes him so compelling, but it is also his own quiet, determined dignity in the face of villainous bombast, his rock-steady sanity as he confronts an insane world. So when the chance came along to take this historically important character – one of the most significant sources of the early comic book superheroes, especially Batman – and bring him into the modern world, I couldn’t resist. The Spider is firmly rooted in the Depression era, but he also has qualities that seem timeless, in no small part because those qualities have influenced so many characters that have come after him. This is the kind of character who inhabits stories that are both archetypal and inspiring as well as full throttle fun.”

The Spider cover artist and character designer Alex Ross says, “I always found it fascinating that there was a spider-based hero in the pulp era of the ’40s who first wore a webbed cape and mask in the movie serials.”

“Dynamite plans to give The Spider the same quality care that we have given to all of our properties. With David (Liss) being the incredible writer he is, and Alex bringing The Spider showcasing a look reflective of his early days, with covers by Alex (Ross), John Cassaday, and additional high profile artists, this is going to be a great read, with incredible art and visuals by Colton Worley,” says Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. “Stay tuned for more exciting news regarding The Spider!”

The Spider was created by Harry Steeger at Popular Publications in 1933. He fought crime by donning a black fedora, a black cape, a trademark ring and a brace of .45 automatics to terrorize the criminal underworld, while driving in his sleek black specially outfitted Daimler.

The Spider novels were mainly written by Norvell W. Page, who filled them with danger, impending doom, fantastic villains, and great action!
