Well, there ya go! Another year and another broadcast of the penultimate film-based award show, The Academy Awards aka The Oscars. Seth MacFarlane did an excellent job as host mixing in plenty of topical jabs and some very funny asides as well. He was a great choice to get the audience for the Oscars to skew younger, and he was both classy and comical at the same time. Plus, he’s got one hell of a singing voice!
I’m very glad Argo won Best Picture (See it if you haven’t!), and am still baffled why Ben Affleck didn’t get a nom for Best Director, which went to Ang Lee who directed Life of Pi. Life of Pi swept a wide range of categories including Cinematography, Score, and Visual Effects.
Adele won for her song “Skyfall” from the Bond flick of the same name, and Skyfall also won for Sound Editing. I was happy to see two of Hollywood’s hottest women win for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress with Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) and Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) taking home the statue, respectively.
And I just have to mention that Jennifer Lawrence taking a spill on the Oscar steps and handling it with grace and style made her even more awesome and sexy in my mind!
Tarantino won Best Original Screenplay for Django Unchained, and we learned that Charlize Theron is his next door neighbor. Argo won Best Adapted Screenplay with writer Chris Terrio taking home the gold.
Daniel Day-Lewis won for Best Actor for Lincoln, and Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained.
I also enjoyed the Bond tribute and the salute to movie musicals. They helped break up the festivities. I would, however, would love to know what jokes Seth wanted to use but were cut due to time or for being too edgy (although the Rihanna/Chris Brown joke and the Kardashian jab were quite funny!).
It was a great Oscar telecast that ran about 30 minutes longer than projected but it always does no matter how much they seem to shorten and cut things near the end. Here’s to another year of great films, filmmakers, and performances!
What did you think of Seth MacFarlane as host? What made you excited? Disappointed? Leave a comment and let us know!
