Matsuno developing with Level-5

A new adventure for the 3DS!

When Yasumi Matsuno announced that he would begin developing for Level-5 games, RPG fans rejoiced. The writer/director of the Ogre Battle series and Final Fantasy Tactics is famed for his brooding, complex political storylines, being the only man to thus far receive two perfect 40/40 scores from Famitsu magazine for Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII, though since leaving SquareEnix in 2006 he had mostly stayed quiet, offering a script to the Wii brawler Mad World and not much else. In June, it was revealed that he was joining the staff of Level-5, known for the Professor Layton and Dark Cloud series’s, as well as the more recent entries into the famed Dragon Quest saga, which holds the distinction of being among the first Japanese RPGs.

The first game being made of the deal has been revealed to be titled Guild 01 for the 3DS, apparently taking to heart the lessons of the goofy Tim Roth comedy Four Rooms by having a different team working on four smaller games-within-games. In addition to Matsuno’s dark RPG Crimson Shroud, Guild 01 will contain a 3D shooter developed by Suda51 (No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned), an ‘airport simulator’ by Yoot Saito (Dreamcast’s bizarre Seaman), and a RPG shopkeeper simulator by Japanese comedian Yoshiyuki Hirai. The game is due out in Japan in 2012, and hopefully we’ll hear an announcement for an American release soon.
