The one thing I kept asking myself during this 43 minute performance was: when does it get funny? As a person who enjoys and has reviewed several stand-up DVDs for this site, I was looking forward to another comic performance to enjoy. The problem was he wasn’t that funny.
Most of his jokes fell flat, and the audience’s reaction is evidence of this fact. Other times, he had to motivate the audience to cheer for some point her was making or curse to get a laugh. I don’t know about you, but it seemed a little forced to me.
His opening bits about doing his act in Alabama, France, and the Olympics chug along and lose steam the farther he gets into each bit. The remaining 30 minutes made me wonder what makes this guy as the DVD box says “one of today’s most gifted young comedians.”
Now, am I being too harsh? Perhaps. I am judging his act based on this one performance that took place in New York City. Maybe he’s done other shows with laugh-til-you cry bits and belly laughs galore. Neither was present in this show.

Don’t get me wrong, Jo Koy seems like a very nice guy who is fun to be around. It’s just this particular show that needs a little work.
