Disney’s Bolt – Blu-ray/DVD Review

There’s only one thing I have to say about this movie: If you haven’t seen Disney’s Bolt, see it! It’s one of the best animated movies I have seen in a long time. It’s funny, touching, and kicks major butt. The combination of action, suspense, comedy, and drama works so well you’ll wonder why you didn’t see it in theatres. I know I do.

The story: Celebrity dog Bolt (John Travolta) has no clue he’s the star of a hit TV show. Even the girl he’s sworn to protect in the show, Penny (Miley Cyrus), must keep the truth from him. When Penny’s character is kidnapped in order to create buzz and ratings, Bolt believes she’s really gone.

What results is a cross-country journey of friendship and discovery for Bolt. Along the way he meets a street-wise cat, Mittens (Susie Essman), and an action-loving hamster named Rhino (Mark Walton).

It’s a fantastic and amazing movie that I cannot recommend enough. There are a few intense moments that may be a bit scary for little ones, but if they could handle The Incredibles, this should be a piece of cake.

And as for the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack? Another jackpot! Thank you Disney for including the same content on BOTH the Blu-ray and DVD! The bonus features are fun to watch and don’t take up a lot of time. Here’s a quick rundown:

Deleted Scenes

You can watch them with optional audio commentary by first-time directors Byron Howard and Chris Williams. What you’ll see are storyboarded scenes with the voices edited in. Great for those who are interested in the production of animated films. May be tedious and frustrating for those who just like to watch.

Act, Speak! The Voices of Bolt

Get to know the amazing voice cast of the film which include John Travolta (Hairspray, Grease, and dozens of other films), Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie), Susie Essman (HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm), Mark Walton (a story editor at Disney in his first voice role), and James Lipton (Bravo’s Inside the Actor’s Studio).

Music & More

In Session with John Travolta and Miley Cyrus

A brief look into the recording session for the song “I Thought I Lost You.”

Music Video

Yep, you guessed it, the music video of the song “I Thought I Lost You.”

Bonus Shorts (there’s only one, so why is this plural?)

Super Rhino Short

Awesome, fun, and amazingly animated. A must-see!

True, there are a few other bonus features not included on the DVD, but they’re nothing to complain over.

But wait! A third disc? Yes. You can also download a digital copy of the film to you computer or mobile device and take Bolt with you wherever you go.

I can honestly recommend buying this edition of Disney’s Bolt. It’s what the 70th Anniversary Edition of Pinocchio combo pack should have been like. Bravo Disney for getting it right with Bolt!

Bolt barks its way to an A++! Definitely worth seeing and buying!
