MUSIC REVIEW: Gears of War 2 – The Soundtrack

Video games wouldn’t give players a great experience if they didn’t feature a stellar sound design. Gears of War 2 is one of this year’s most highly acclaimed games for the Xbox 360. Epic Games went all out when it went to composing its soundtrack. The score was composed by Steve Jablonsky and recorded with the Skywalker Symphonic Orchestra and Chorus at Skywalker Sound.

Jablonsky has previously worked on Transformers, The Island, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre so he knows what is needed when it comes to big epic scores.

A lot of this music captures what it would be like to fight in a never ending war when man is on the brink of destruction. It’s relentless and brutal.

That being said, a lot of the tracks sound very similar. Practically all of them feature a continuous bass drum beat. Part of this issue is that there isn’t a large variety of instruments being used to try and bring out different emotions.

The soundtrack has a runtime of just over an hour and it features 27 tracks.

This isn’t a soundtrack that I would necessarily go around blasting in my car, but to psych myself up for a Gears of War frag fest, I could see it coming in use.
