Epitome (noun) – a person or thing embodying a quality.

Hyperbole (noun) – an exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally.

That concludes our vocabulary lesson for this review.

In a stand-up comedy environment where vulgarity, obscenity, shock, and racial epithets have become the norm, it’s hard to fathom that there are clean comics working anymore. Stars of family-friendly sitcoms like Bob Saget of Full House and Tim Allen of Home Improvement both have acts that no parent would allow their child to watch on purpose. In the case of stand-up comedian Brain Regan, it’s the exact opposite. Much like Jeff Foxworthy, Regan’s stand-up routine is funny without being offensive, entertaining without using shock tactics, and safe enough for little Susie and Grandma to watch with the rest of the family.

Regan is a class act, which is hard to find on most Comedy Central programs these days. There are no bleeped out words or suggestive dialogue. What Regan brings is observational humor along with humorous commentary that spans a range of topics from amusement park rides to his addiction to TV.

It was nice to watch a comedian who doesn’t have to rely on bad language and sex jokes to get the audience laughing. And I was laughing out loud…a lot! Regan’s an animated guy, who uses facial expressions and body language to bring his humor to life.

Brian Regan proves that modern comics don’t have to wallow in the gutter in order to generate laughs. His act is funny for the sake of being funny. It would be nice to see Comedy Central produce more programming like this.

The special features include a short encore performance where Regan talks about Dora the Explorer (very funny!), and names for military equipment. There’s also a mini-documentary about what goes on behind-the-scenes during a production of this nature.

Brian Regan: The Epitome of Hyperbole gets an A! Funny stuff.
