Colin McRae dead in helicopter crash?

Colin McRae

For a lot of us gamers, the name “Colin McRae” is nearly synonymous with a line of great rally games. But it appears that bad news has struck. Colin McRae is feared dead in a helicopter crash in Scotland.

The chopper was owned by McRae, and originally four bodies were found in the crash. McRae’s agent confirmed, however, that Colin was piloting the craft. No survivors have been found, and the identities of the other passengers have not been confirmed yet.

Colin McRae was a popular rally driver known in the gaming industry for the series of racing games that share his name. Goodbye, Colin. We’ll always remember you.

Ninja Gaiden 2 – the teaser, the screenshots, the announcement.

Add The Pipeline: Entertainment Within a Box to your page

This whole saga starts yesterday, when several gaming sites got their filthy hands on screenshots of Ninja Gaiden 2, which was reportedly on the Xbox Japan website before it disappeared. Apparently, someone at Redmond Japan had screwed up the site, because the big anouncement was supposed to happen at the pre-Tokyo Game Show Presser. You can find the concerned screenshots at the bottom.

At the top, you can see the teaser of the game, which was shown off at the Presser. It shows the game’s protagonist, with chic graphics and stuff, but it’s just a godforsaken teaser. The screenshots, on the other hand, are full of blood, gore, decapitations and other ninja-ness.

What will it feature? A brand new engine and a “finishing blows” system have been guaranteed. There will be a sort of health regeneration feature with “semi-permanent damage restored at save points”, whatever that means. You will fight as Ryu again in Ninja Gaiden 2 for a good 30 or so hours of story-mode gameplay. Ninja Gaiden will be Xbox 360 exclusive and will come out somewhere in 2008.

Indiana Jones IV’s official title revealed by Shia LaBeouf

Indiana Jones IV

… and the title is Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Yep, sounds like a perfect Indy title. A little cheesy, in my opinion, but it’s perfectly Indiana Jones. But considering the length of the title, I won’t be surprised if most people continue to call it by its working title, Indiana Jones IV.

The title was unveiled by Shia LaBeouf, who will star in the movie alongside ol’ Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford himself. The grand unveiling took place at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The movie is geared for a (mostly) international release on May 22, 2008 (May of course, in LucasArts tradition). Spielberg is directing here, with George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy serving as Executive Producers.

Filmmakers Don’t Know Games

Next-Gen.biz had a great article with Jeremy Bolt, the Producer from the upcoming Resident Evil: Extinction film. I love this article because it talks about someone other than Uwe Boll. Sure everyone loves making fun of Uwe, as well as anyone that attempts to adapt a video game to film. Lets face it, video game movies aren’t high quality – but some are at least enjoyable.

Mortal Kombat: The Movie

Next-Gen’s article reveals how little producers care for the material that they’re adapting from. It’s good that Paul W.S. Anderson at least plays the game before writing the film script, but does he and other writers understand what makes the game great in the first place?

“Gone are the days where you could just quickly jump on an IP like a videogame, make a close adaptation, and then just watch the money roll in,” said Jeremy Bolt. From my perspective it seems like filmmakers are still doing this. Obviously films have to appeal to general audiences as much as possible, in order to gross the largest amount of money possible, but why is it that films based on games have sucked, do suck, and will suck?

What it comes down to is one simple thing. You can play a game as much as you want to, but you will always have a different experience than someone else. That’s the beautiful thing about video games – there are multiple possibilities that change the experience users receive and in turn react to. Before any worthwhile adaptation can be created, it is key to understand what made the game good and how it impacted the player.

Lets face it, there has probably never been a film based on a video game that was directly made for the fans. If there ever was, it probably still bombed at the box office. Is any gamer really going to pay to watch a direct translation of what they’ve already done on their own in a video game?

This is a dilemma that all filmmakers face when trying to adapt a video game to film. It’s not an easy process. Much like the comic book to film adaptations, the best films will come when there are more closely tied collaborations between filmmakers, that fully understand why the material has a fanbase, and the industry that created the original material.

Operation Flashpoint 2 Teaser, ArmA 2’s official announcement! Military Simulations Galore!

ArmA 2 Preview

Now, if I were asked to name the most under-rated game I have ever played, it has to be Operation Flashpoint. That remarkable shooter had the capacity to blast the very foundations of FPS gameplay with its kickass GTA3-crossed-with-Battlefield 2 approach. Unfortunately, this gem from Bohemia Interactive never got big enough.

So while Codemasters went on to make a sequel to Operation Flashpoint, Bohemia took off on their own and decided to make ArmA. OF2 lingers in the air for years with only a handful of screenies sometimes, while ArmA was made, released and everything is cool. Since Bohemia wants to look even cooler, they’ve announced ArmA 2. But Codemasters isn’t far behind. They’ve proved that they are actually working on the game with the new teaser trailer they’ve made!

Hit the jump to find out all about what’s going on, as well as a bunch of screenies for ArmA 2.
