Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? Irrational thinks so, and they’re heading back to BioShock – with a twist.
Irrational’s much-awaited ‘Project Icarus’ was finally announced today, and it turns out to be BioShock in the sky. That’s right, it’s the same idea as BioShock, but set in the sky, and it’s called BioShock Infinite.
Check out the trailer above, which, judging by the view, looks like its set in-game. We have no confirmation of this, of course, but if Irrational is really touting this project to be super-amazing, it must be. So what do we have? A reference to the Big Daddy probably means its set in the same universe as BioShock. It also features a Big Daddy-like steam-based giant robot/cyborg thing with a beating heart enclosed beneath a glass casing. No prizes for guessing what his weak spot is.
The game will have you play a former Pinkerton Agent Booker DeWitt, who is sent to rescue a woman named Elizabeth, and develops a relationship with her while onboard the city in the clouds. He augments his abilities with her, and together the heroic pair must escape from the flying city in what sounds like a terrific issue of Amazing Stories. “DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.” Sounds terrifically exciting.
But what sounds really exciting, is that to create the expansive environment of Columbia, the exact opposite of claustrophobic Rapture, Irrational Games has had to build up a whole new engine. So yeah, this is probably our first glimpse at a really next-next-gen game, if you will. Check out the official site here, and the screenshots below, and you’re set to be on the hype train to the sky for this one.
BioShock Infinite is set for a 2012 release (I know, pretty far out) and will be releasing for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Let them take their time to develop this, it’ll be worth it.
That looked pretty sweet
