Catlow – DVD Review

Catlow is a rip-roaring and fun-filled Western romp starring three big name actors from the early 1970s. There’s plenty of excitement to be had in this film from 1971. The tone and style of the film is a great departure from the classic Westerns of John Ford and Howard Hawks, but the conventions and archetypes of the genre remain in tact.

And what’s not to love? Yul Brenner (The Ten Commandments, The King & I) as the smiling, easygoing outlaw Catlow; Richard Crenna (First Blood, Hot Shots! Part Deux, Wrongfully Accused) as the sheriff/friend who has sworn to bring him in; and Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek, In Search of…) as the bounty hunter out to hang Catlow for his crimes.

Throw in plenty of gunfights, vista shots, and Indians, and you’ve got yourself a Western that is enjoyable on many levels.

The film is rated PG-13 for Western-style violence, language, and nudity (you get to see Leonard Nimoy naked, back and front, just to warn you).

If you like Westerns, or even the work of Brenner, Crenna, and Nimoy, Catlow is a rare Western treat that should not go unwatched.
