The Caretaker – Movie Review

caretaker

There are events in the lives of many people that they wish to forget. For them, the psychological function of repression is a powerful tool that can help eliminate painful and tragic memories from the mind to the point that they can almost feel non-existent. But when these traumatic events are triggered by an object, a person, or a fleeting memory, what follows can be as equally pain-inducing as the initial event.

What happens when such an event returns to one’s consciousness with such force that emotions and actions cause unintended harm? In The Caretaker, we get a glimpse at the dangers of repression, the aftermath of tragedy gone ignored, and the repercussions of past traumatic events that swallow anyone involved in present day activities in their wake of violence.

Birdie (Sondra Kerr Blake) is an elderly woman whom many believe to be a witch. When her initial caretaker has had enough of her shenanigans and the strange events that surround her, Birdie’s granddaughter, Mallorie (Meegan Walker), finds herself tasked with keeping watch over her grandmother. Along with Mallorie’s boyfriend, August (Sean Martini), the duo do their best to care for the aged woman; but mysterious things begin to happen around the house.

Mallorie soon starts having visions and sleepwalking. It’s all a bit much for August who wants nothing more than to get away from the creepy house and its ancient inhabitant (and she doesn’t care much for him, either). When Mallorie uncovers a truth about her grandmother’s past that she had long since repressed, the young woman finds herself trapped in the powerful grip of a world she had once thought gone forever.

Filled with plenty of twists and many creepy moments, The Caretaker draws you into its mysterious narrative and unfolds piece-by-piece until the final revelation leaves you both shocked and a tad off-kilter. It’s a solid work of supernatural storytelling that will have you on the edge of your seat until the screen goes black.

Look for character actor Barry Jenner in one of his final performances. TV fans will know him best as Lieutenant Murtaugh on Family Matters and as Admiral Ross on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Jenner and the rest of the cast deliver stellar performances that are both entertaining and intriguing to watch.

I recommend The Caretaker!

The Caretaker is available now on iTunes, Amazon, and other digital platforms.

Marauders – Blu-ray Review

MARAUDERS BD OCARD 3D

Christopher Meloni is back kicking ass and taking names in the action flick, Marauders. Meloni – who’s best known to TV audiences as Detective Elliot Stabler from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit – plays Montgomery, an FBI agent with the Robbery/Homicide Division in Ohio. He’s a no nonsense guy with a badge, a gun, and tragedy in his past that drives him to seek justice for those who have been wronged.

Marauders Day 2 everything-412.dng

When a bank robbery results in murder, Montgomery and his FBI team are ready to swoop in a make things right. The only problem is, someone’s trying to make it harder than it should be. Will they be able to put a stop to the chaos before it escalates beyond their control?

Along with solid action, Marauders is a clever whodunit that will have you guessing who’s responsible for the chaos that has erupted in the city until the very end. There are plenty of twists, plenty of surprises, and lots of mayhem as bank after bank is hit, and the team of robbers uses technology to their advantage.

Meloni

Joining Meloni’s Montgomery on his quest to track down those responsible for the city’s bank robbing spree are Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Adrian Grenier (Entourage) who make up an elite team of FBI Agents ready to take whatever actions are necessary to quell the succession of robberies. As the pieces begin to fall into place, the stakes are raised, and Montgomery and his team find themselves in the middle of something bigger than they ever imagined.

Also along for the ride is a very subdued Bruce Willis (Die Hard film series, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense) who plays the owner of the banks that have been hit. It’s an interesting turn for Willis. He’s not in the center of the action, but it’s nice to see him in and out of the story throughout the film.

Meloni and Willis

Director Steven C. Miller does an excellent job creating a gritty underworld where crime runs amok and the most corrupt are sometimes those we least expect. From its sweeping vista shots over the city, to it’s in-your-face ugliness, Marauders succeeds visually as well as narratively.

Special features include Commentary from Director Steven C. Miller and Cinematographer Brandon Cox; The Making of Marauders featurette; Deleted/Extended Scenes; and Interviews with the Cast & Crew.

For a solid crime-drama with plenty of action and lots of twists, I recommend Marauders.

Marauders is available September 13, 2016 on DVD and Blu-ray!

Weiner – DVD Review

Weiner

If you’ve ever considered going into politics and the 2016 Presidential Election hasn’t dissuaded you, I recommend you watch the cautionary tale that is Weiner. This fascinating documentary takes us through the tumultuous mayoral campaign of formerly disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner who you may know better as that politician who accidentally Tweeted a pic of his junk out to all his followers instead of in a private message.

Thus began his fall from grace and his eventual resignation. However, not one to be knocked down for long, Weiner rose up once again for another fight. What results is an insane narrative of self-destructive behavior, political suicide, and what not to do in a marriage. And the craziest part of it all: it’s all true!

Weiner is full of cringe-worthy moments that make you want to turn away in horror at what is happening before you…but you just can’t look away. It’s a film that gives great insight into what goes into a political campaign, but also shows how to – or in this case how not to – handle a political scandal that just won’t go away.

If you’re like me, you’ll be baffled at how crazy things get and how quickly things unravel as Anthony Weiner desperately tries to cling to the last remaining shreds of his dignity and his changes to become mayor of New York City.

Weiner is an excellent study of what not to do when it hits the fan, a thing that is almost a daily occurrence in the life of Anthony Weiner’s mayoral campaign. Again, before you consider a life in the political spotlight watch this documentary then ask yourself if you have any skeletons past or present that could derail your dream of public service.

I highly recommend Weiner. It’s a must-see for political junkies, and for anyone who enjoys salacious political scandals.

Weiner is available now on DVD!

DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Year – DVD Review

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

It’s time to get your cape on with the girls at Super Hero High in the all-new animated movie, DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Year! Much like other re-imaginings of pop culture figures, Hero of the Year brings together female superheroes and super villains from the DC Comics universe.

Alongside heroes Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Katana we have the likes of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy attending classes with them. It’s a pretty creative concept that works well and brings these strong female characters together for an action-packed animated adventure.

During the week of the annual Hero of the Year awards show, a shape-shifting baddie named Dark Opal creates a cacophony of chaos for our collection of super kids. Together, they must work as a united force to stop Dark Opal and his apocalyptic scheme before he destroys the world and ruins the awards show. Will the girls resolve this crisis before it’s too late?

DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Year is an entertaining animated film that showcases Girl Power in all its awesome glory. There are plenty of references and nods to other DC stories and characters, plus look for cameos from the likes of Commissioner Gordon, Lois Lane, Amanda Waller, Hal Jordan (Green Lantern), and The Flash.

11 Minutes – DVD Review

11 Minutes

A lot can happen in the span of eleven minutes and in the film, 11 Minutes, a lot definitely happens. Eleven minutes at first glance appears to be a short period of time, and yet so much activity and life-changing events can take place over the course of an eleven-
minute time frame that the thought of it is pretty intense.

In the film, 11 Minutes, we are presented with a broad array of seemingly innocuous and unrelated events happening all across the city. Some are mundane activities, while others are in themselves compelling and alter the lives of those directly involved. However, the film’s chronology is encapsulated all within the same eleven minutes, which leads to a collusion of events at the climax of the film.

11 Minutes is a clever metaphor for life as we know it. While what we’re doing, thinking, working for, and reacting to is uniquely from our perspective there are millions of other people living life and doing the exact same things in any given time frame. Sometimes our lives intertwine with others around us, other times we pass them by as nameless, faceless beings sharing the same space.

Whatever happens, we are collectively connected by one singularity: Time. And when our lives within that shared time connect, intersect, or clash is when we realize that we are never truly alone in this human experience.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for the number “11” in its various incarnations throughout the film. Can you spot them all?

For a unique narrative experience, check out 11 Minutes on DVD today.
