Tools? HAH! Do you take me for a fool?

Through out history the thing that set humans apart from beasts was our use of tools and intellect to survive, not strength. Starting with simple rocks used as hammers, to brilliantly complex automated tools we have used tools constantly to aid our lives. The question is this though, are such tools always necessary?

A week or so ago I purchased a refurbished Logitech MX Revolution on eBay for a surprisingly cheap price, it arrived a few short days after the purchase in seemingly perfect condition. I plugged in the mouse’s charger and USB receiver. For almost an hour I let my new mouse charge, trying to see if it would work after a half charge. No luck, so I let it charge more. On a full charge I tested the mouse, still nothing. I plugged in the USB receiver into every USB port on my computer, nothing worked. I uninstalled and reinstalled Logitech’s setpoint programs numerous times, still nothing.

I contacted the seller to see if I could get it replaced, but I was too lazy and cheap to pay for the shipping back to them. I contact Logitech to see if I could obtain a replacement USB receiver assuming it was the problem as the mouse reacted in the same way that my MX1000 did to movement without the mouse’s signal being received. I had no heard from them, and assumed they chose not to respond because it was refurbished. I scoured the net for any piece of information to fix it or buy replacement parts, even contemplating to open it up and fix it myself with nothing but a screwdriver and simple understanding of the mouse’s mechanics, but chose to wait still for a reply.

After watching a movie I recorded on my newly acquired DVR I turned on my computer to do one last email check. Logitech finally sent me a reply, at sometime between midnight and Four AM no less, saying they had trouble receiving my question due to a system malfunction. I followed what they suggested, but it didn’t help. The thing that I thought queer though was that parts within the mouse itself seemed to move when I barely shook it. Being curious I shook it again to see if the parts were solidly in there, then shrugged it off. I sent an email back to Logitech saying their solution didn’t work and picked up the mouse to put it back. Right then I noticed the cursor move. I tested the mouse, it worked. After all other efforts all that was needed was a good old fashion(and simpleminded) shaking.

It was not the software that helped me, nor any such help from either supplier, or even a tool to fix the internal workings, but a simple and curious shaking. The strange thing is is that acts of these natures happen all to often. People pull out schematics, dozens of tools, and giant pieces of equipment to fix an item when a simple savage rapping or shaking fixes the problem. Damn science! Justin smash, Justin fix.

You gotta FIGHT! For your RIGHT! To Plaaaaaaaaaay GAMES!

I reported a couple of days ago on the BBFC and Irish Film Censor Office’s decisions to effectively ban Manhunt 2 in the United Kingdom and Ireland by refusing to rate the game, citing “casual sadism” and “callous violence”, and the ESRB’s decision to rate the game “Adults Only”. Since then, Sony and Nintendo have both reaffirmed their policies (which I was unaware of at the time of the last article) of refusing to license “AO”-rated games, or to even let them play on their systems. Universally, these boards and companies are treating this game as an imminent threat to society, and that is not an exaggeration on my part.

This should put a burr beneath the scrotum of any adult who feels that we have a certain right to decide what forms of entertainment are suitable for our own consumption. As an American, I applaud the constitutionally-enforced inability of the ESRB to ban this game, but am saddened and disturbed by Nintendo’s and Sony’s decisions to disallow games designed for responsible, mentally-capable adults. According to figures from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), sixty-nine percent of American heads of households play computer and video games, and the average gamer age is 33. Of all gamers, only 31% are under age 18, with 44% falling between 18-49 years of age, and 25% aged 50 years and over. Quick addition tells us 79% of all gamers are adults, yet these companies, boards, and committees find this adult content intolerable, and in some cases illegal. This is disheartening to me in a way I can’t begin to express to you.

But I digress. Before I lose you on this one, I wanted to share with you GAMERS FOR GAMING, a cause championed by Jim Sterling and David Houghton, two of my new favoritest tea-sipping bad-asses over at Destructoid.com. They’ve attached themselves to this story like a couple of rabid wolves may attach themselves to… another rabid wolf… attached to… freedom of expression? I dunno, metaphors aside, these guys are working on getting our thoughts and feelings across to everyone who is working to stifle our freedom to choose, the freedom of media, and the freedom of expression in art. Fight with us. Follow along. This affects us as gamers, as consumers, and as free people. It’s not a little issue. It’s not about one game, but about everything that ratings boards and law makers can take from you in the future once we start down this slippery slope. There are so many reasons to get in on this, I’ll not try to innumerate them. Get involved.

A very special thank you to the people with the voice that have taken up this torch. It’s good to see gamers getting involved in something worthwhile.

Manhunt 2 rated AO stateside; Banned in Britain, Ireland

manhunt_2_wii_box_art_final.jpg

Once again, stuffy old people are afraid to count on free adults to distinguish for themselves the bold line between fictitious entertainment and really-real life. Low-resolution slaughterfest and high-profile hype-machine Manhunt 2 (slated for release on PS2, Wii, and PSP) is receiving the royal cold-shoulder from ratings boards across the globe, being banned so far in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and awarded the scarlet letters “AO” in the US. I’m sure the mania isn’t settled yet. Read on for the disheartening details of worldwide stupidity and my carefully formed, ojective rebuttal.

Ok What the Hell Bob Barker?

rosie05.jpg

Well we all know that Bob Barker left the famous show “The Price is Right”, but did you know who’s going to replace him? Well if it were up to him it would be Rosie O’ Donnell. There’s not much more to say about this particular choice because just what the hell? Let me know your thoughts though because I’m still baffled.

There are actually a lot of other people who are also up for hosting the show like: John O’Hurley, Mark Steines, Todd Newton and George Hamilton, but still Rosie is just blowing my mind.

But who knows maybe some of you would like to see that, would you?

Oceans 13: Not Too Shabby

oceans-13.jpg

Well I am not a great movie critic, nor a respectable one but I am a frequent movie go-er who might share the same opinions as many out there.

Oceans 13 started off well but from seeing the other two, Oceans 11 and Oceans 12 one could already tell what the plot and how it was going to unfold would be. The only difference-well the biggest in this one was the fact that it seemed like the conflict was straight out of a Mission Impossible movie. Things just got more complicated to where it seemed like there would be no end, but none-the-less Hollywood pulled through and it worked out in a fairly well told story.

The movie was good over-all but despite that the movie had it’s bland moments where the yawning in the theater was apparent.

Can’t say that I’m mad though, I had a free movie pass.

Paris In Jail: Thank You!

So as we all know this website is not just about video games it is expanding to much much more then just that. As we also know this website is not about breaking news so as much as this is very recent news this is not breaking news. This is however a review site where people will be able to read and share their opinions.

I for one could not be happier with this whole Paris in jail issue, it’s about time. She is serving the rest of her 45 day sentence for violating probation and I for one am relieved.

Thank you Paris for a wonderful day of yelling at the television and a reality check that celebrities ( who really shouldn’t be) are people to.

Now that that’s over, lets put it to rest.

Thank you Paris, it was a good day.
