Dark Knight, Anthony Michael Hall’s character revealed? (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

An interesting little tidbit from Batman-On-Film Chicago filming spy:

“Anthony Michael Hall is not someone created for the film (like ‘Rachel Dawes’). His character is from the comic books and is rather well known. I know you don’t do spoilers, so let’s just say he seems to be good, but is really bad, or it could be the other way around — it’s quite the ‘mystery.’ The fans will definately [sic] get a kick out of his appearance in the film!”

Sounds like Vernon Field, a character from “The Long Halloween” series of Batman comics. Here’s a short description of the character from Wikipedia.

“Vernon appears to be meek, unassuming and harmless-looking. In reality, however, he is cunning and extremely corrupt, a tool of Gotham City’s gangsters.”

In “The Long Halloween”, Field was indirectly responsible for the creation of Two-Face, supplying an associate with a disguised bottle of acid, which is sprayed in Harvey Dent’s face during a court testimony, mutilating Dent and triggering his downward spiral into a psychotic killer. Say, “Hello,” to Internet Sherlock!

Favreau talks “Iron Man”, I get excited

Director John Favreau (via his Myspace) apologizes to us fans for not having an Iron Man teaser trailer nestled in before Transformers, but he promises to “reveal something very cool very soon”. With Iron Man sharing an hour block with Marvel and their other upcoming film, Hulk, later this month at San Diego ComicCon, it seems something very cool will be revealed very soon, indeed.

“We’ve secured a prime slot Saturday afternoon [July 28] in the big room at SDCC. We will split an hour with Marvel and Hulk and plan to cut something together to reward the fans for their interest, support and patience. In addition to our Saturday afternoon presentation, we will be doing a signing and poster giveaway at the Marvel booth on Saturday. Paramount is also doing a rundown of its slate on Thursday which I will do my best to attend as well.”

“Cut together”? Hmm, I’m no Hollywood film linguist, but it sounds like he’s talking about revealing the first Iron Man trailer! If that is the case, well, I just feel like a little school girl again!

Favreau drops a few more little nuggets, stating that they “are essentially using the books to inspire our story”. He also reiterates that this movie is being told as Iron Man’s origin story, and that while it stands on its own as a movie, it definitely leaves more to be told. I smell box office sequel revenue!

Finally he takes a moment to respond to some rumors suggesting Samuel L. Jackson, Hillary Swank, and Favreau himself all play roles in the film. I had previously told you of hushed reports of Sam Jackson playing Col. Nick Fury, but there have also been whispers of Hillary Swank playing a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, and Favreau as a Vegas security guard. Favreau says, “There is no truth to any of these rumors,” but then adds, “(Well, maybe one is true.)”

Ahhh!! Leave ’em wantin’ more, eh, John? I declare this story’s comments an official “fanboy forum” for uninformed opinion hurling as to which of these rumors may be true. I say Sam Jackson’s in the movie, because I’ve never wanted anything more in my whole life, except that pony on my sixteenth birthday, which I never got. Don’t you hurt me, too, John Favreau!

Transformers, Cheaper than the movie

For the three of you out there in Interwebz land who have not yet seen Transformers (I’m with ya), either because you’re worried Michael Bay will destroy your fond childhood memories of G1 Transformers, or because you’re just too broke, I come to you with the solution.

I submit now, for your viewing pleasure, what Transformers could have been if given to a classy, independent director that cared for the integrity of the Transformers brand. You don’t need flashy CGI effects and multi-million dollar budgets to produce compelling cinema. They’ve cut out all the garbage and got down to what fans really want: awesome Transformer action. Brace yourselves, ladies and gentleman, it’s an intense ride.

Japan to build Huge Gigantor statue

Gigantor!

Kobe in Japan is going to be the home of a massive Gigantor statue! The hulking figure will be 18 feet tall and 70 tons heavy to boot. Estimated cost: ¥135 million, which makes about $1.09 million. Those Japs sure have lots of money!

Kobe will also simultaneously commemorate the life of Mitsuteru Yokoyama, the creator of the original Gigantor manga series. Gigantor then appeared in a 1963 anime series and in 2005, in live-action! The movie was made in Japan, which is probably why I’ve never heard of it.

Regardless, the might of Gigantor shall finally manifest itself as a great statue!

Sabretooth going the way of Captain America?

You know how it goes. Wolverine and Sabretooth fight, beat each other to death, and come back for more. Every time you think it’s the last fight, one of them (usually Sabretooth) regenerates from a single fingernail over the course of a year or two, and the rivalry begins anew. But, it may not be that way the next time they fight.

In a conference call with writer Jeph Loeb, IGN got some pretty interesting clues into what is looking like the impending demise of Sabretooth. Loeb expressed a desire to give Wolvie a new rival, a head honcho type rather than another thug. But, if Wolverine is to have a new arch-nemesis, what’s to happen to Sabretooth?

“If you’ve been reading Wolverine: Origins then you’re aware of the fact that a sword exists… that can actually kill him,” said Loeb. “Whereas his healing power would always work, if he was cut by this sword, it would not work. As we have learned through this story, Wolverine and Sabretooth aren’t brothers at all, but they’re from the same species. What will work on Logan will work on Creed.”

Here’s what Loeb had to say when IGN asked if Sabretooth was on the Green Mile:

“I don’t want to spoil anything,” Loeb replied. “If you connect the dots… If by the end of issue #54, you think what Sabretooth has done is okay, which Logan does not… Victor is really, really out of control. Combine that with the fact that we see in the preview art that Wolverine went to get a sword that could kill himself… I think you could connect a line. But I don’t want to spoil anything. I think the question is if he doesn’t kill him, then why doesn’t he. I’ve written that story, I wrote about why the Batman doesn’t kill the Joker. This will be different.”

Uh oh! Loeb goes on later in the conversation about how much freedom he has with his writing at Marvel, how big changes are taking place across the board, and how comics are no longer content to be the same story month to month, year to year. Coupled with some of the preview shots from the upcoming fight (which I have galleried below), things are looking grim for Victor Creed, especially in that last page. Dang!

If you told me that you thought Where the Wild Things Are was the greatest book ever written, I would not argue with you. During my childhood, I read and re-read that story so many times I knew it by heart. With that in mind, I am absolutely geeking over the fact that a live action production is being made by Spike Jonez. Now, in addition to being the greatest book ever written, Where the Wild Things Are may become the greatest film ever made. Do you hear me, Spike Jonez? GREATEST FILM EVER MADE!
