Mike Tyson Mysteries: The Complete First Season Uncensored – DVD Review

Mike Tyson Mysteries

In the beginning, there was Scooby-Doo. And Scooby-Doo begat a whole host of mystery-themed animated series from Hanna-Barbera that included Josie and the Pussycats, The Funky Phantom, The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, Speed Buggy, and Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels. Needless to say, the 1960s and 1970s were a great time to be solving mysteries in the cartoon world.

Alas, Scooby-Doo was the reigning champion of the lot, with he and the other Mysteries Inc. team still solving mysteries to this day in all new series. But while the others may have fallen into the annals of TV history, it’s time for a new heavyweight mystery-solving contender to enter the ring.

Enter, Mike Tyson Mysteries, an insane, irreverent, and downright ridiculous series on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim that pays homage/satirizes the conventions of Scooby-Doo and its multitude of imitators. From its character design to its goofy premise, Mike Tyson Mysteries pays tribute to the animated mysteries of yesteryear, but with a hilariously profane twist.

And that’s what makes the series so great. No, it’s not for kids. It’s for those who grew up with Scooby-Doo and enjoy sledgehammer-subtle satire and parody. Each episode delves deeper and deeper into comic absurdity, daring you to stop and say, “Did he just say what I think he said?” Yes, he did. And that’s what makes it great, especially the uncensored DVD version that will have you doubled-over with laughter.

Mike Tyson Mysteries stars the real Mike Tyson. Yes, that’s right. It’s not an impersonator; it’s really him. The series also includes the voice talents of comic Norm MacDonald as Pigeon, Jim Rash (Community, That 70’s Show) as the ghost of the Marquess of Queensbury, and Rachel Ramras as Mike Tyson’s adopted daughter Yung Hee. If you like your comedy politically incorrect and over-the-top, then Mike Tyson Mysteries is for you!

I really had a lot of fun watching Mike Tyson Mysteries. Each episode is about 11 minutes long, so it’s easy to get through the ten-episode season once then watch it again a second or third time. It’s a lot of fun and right up there with Robot Chicken as my favorite show on Adult Swim.

For a wholly adult-oriented animated good time, I highly recommend Mike Tyson Mysteries! It’s a winner!

Mike Tyson Mysteries: Season One Uncensored is available on DVD October 20!
