Long-suffering early adopters of the Boxee Box from D-Link were given a Valentine’s Day present with the release of the new Netflix app.
Although the streaming movie service is available on nearly every device known to man, its absence from the otherwise best-in-class Boxee Box was a major embarrassment for Boxee’s developers. For months now, the Boxee forums have been filled with page after page of user complaints about the missed delivery dates.
Our initial test shows that the app compares very favorably with the PS3 version, which currently offers the highest quality Netflix streaming. Of course, your mileage may vary as it depends on the speed of your Internet connection and whether your box is connected via Ethernet or wi-fi. Also, not all movies Netflix offers are available in the highest resolution (1080p, 5.1 audio). But when the stars align, the quality is outstanding.
Check back soon when we’ll be featuring a head-to-head matchup of the Boxee Box vs. Roku, AppleTV, the PS3 and Xbox 360.
In the meantime, we’ve begun the countdown in anticipation of the promised release of Hulu Plus and CBS rentals. No rest for the weary Boxee dev team!
