I was honestly expecting a lot more from You Again, the latest film from director Andy Fickman. With a stellar cast that includes Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman, and Betty White, how can you go wrong? I wanted to like this movie, I was excited to get it to review, so when I finally sat down and watched it there was on thing that kept bothering me.
The main issue is that there is not enough funny to go around. There are plenty of awkward, goofy, and wacky moments throughout the film, but none of them made me laugh-out-loud. I think these actresses are fantastic, but I felt as if their talent was squandered and misused.
Maybe it was all the hype around the film, maybe it was the presence of Betty White, maybe it was just the idea of these women all in one movie that enticed me to want to see it. In the end the film fizzles out too quickly and resorts to sitcom-style antics that feel clichéd and tired (Jamie Lee Curtis versus the bathroom sink drain is a prime example).
Now, perhaps it’s the PG rating that led to the bite being taken out of the film; I don’t know. I would be curious to know what a PG-13 version of this film would have looked like. Perhaps Betty White could have delivered some of those great racy zingers she does so well.
The special features are very funny and entertaining, which is more than I can say for most of the film. The Blu-ray special features include: Following Fickman: On Set with the Director; Blooper Dance Party; Ask the Cast; Funny Or Die – Interview Spoof; and Deleted Scenes.
I really wanted to like this movie, but was disappointed in the end. Let me know what you thought of You Again by leaving a comment below.
