What would Mondays on CBS be like without How I Met Your Mother? Filled with plenty of laughs and great performances from Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, and even Narrator Bob Saget, the show has become something of a cult-classic over the last several seasons.
Filled with one-liners, catch-phrases, and amusing characters, How I Met Your Mother is a classic sitcom with a twist: it’s serialized like Lost or Breaking Bad. The whole show is aligned on the premise that Ted (Josh Radnor) will eventually meet the mother of his children whom he’s telling this tale to in the distant future (voiced by Bob Saget).
Since we already know that he does get her in the end, the only questions that remain are WHO is she and WHEN does he meet her?
Season five, however, takes a detour from the serialized nature of the previous four season and goes for the classic sitcom convention of stand-alone episodes. As a result, the show goes from being clever and innovative to trite and almost silly at times. While the cast is just as funny and entertaining as before, there’s a certain something missing from the fifth season that makes it hard to watch at times.
The same basic elements remain that the first four seasons had, but a lot of the jokes seemed forced and even lacking the punch that they had in previous seasons.
As always, the stand-out character on the show is the womanizing Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) who consistently brings a level of comedy to the series that makes everyone else on the show step-up to the plate and give their best as well.
Special Features include: Bloopers; Music Videos; The Making of “Super Date;” “The Wedding Bride” Trailer – Extended Version; Behind the Scenes of the 100th Episode; and a Series Recap.
I highly recommend you check out the first four seasons and then watch season five. I think you’ll definitely see a difference in how the stories are told and how the change in format affects the series.
