Will nothing stop James Cameron’s Avatar? The 3D sci-fi epic has been the top box office winner for the past seven weekends and in that time has grossed over $2.1 billion worldwide. As the highest-grossing film of all time (taking out Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic with $1.8 billion; it also has taken down Titanic in domestic box office), it’s clear that Avatar could possibly make closer to $3 billion once everything is tallied.
This past weekend, Avatar grossed $30 million, making it #1 again as expected. No film over the last seven weeks has come close to eclipsing Avatar during its opening weekend. People seem to be flocking to see the film multiple times, which only helps to increase the box office revenue for the sci-fi flick.
But what will be the first movie to take the top spot and make Avatar #2? Will it be the remake of The Wolfman with Benicio del Toro (opening on February 12)? Will it be the Tim Burton adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, another 3D feature (out March 5)? Or will it be some sleeper hit that no one expects (like Valentine’s Day, February 12)? Or will it be Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island (out February 19)?
It’s a tough call. With Avatar’s momentum, it’s hard to predict exactly when and what movie will take it down from the top spot. The one thing that is a no-brainer is Avatar’s reign as the top-grossing film of all time will remain for quite a while. After all, it did take 12 years for a film to sink Titanic to the #2 spot.
So now, Cameron has written and directed the two highest-grossing films of all time. Will his next film be able to top Avatar?
In the meantime, Avatar’s success, and potential sweep at the Oscars will keep buzz about the film high. But the question still remains: what movie will knock it from the top spot?
What do you think? Is there any upcoming film worthy enough to take Avatar out of the top spot? Leave a comment and let us know!
