Ghosts of Girlfriends Past – DVD/Blu-ray Review

Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner star in this rom-com fantasy that takes the Dickens classic A Christmas Carol and gives it a modern twist. It’s a fun date movie that not only explores new realms of possibility for a Dickens story, but showcases the iconic Michael Douglas in a type of role he rarely plays.

Connor Mead (McConaughey) is a womanizing photographer who is all about sex, sex, and more sex. He doesn’t want commitment, he doesn’t want love. So, when he shows up at his younger brother’s wedding, his philosophy of life starts to get in the way of the soon-to-married couple’s happiness. This goes especially for the spastic and high-strung bride (Lacey Chabert).

Enter the now-dead Uncle Wayne (Douglas), who tells Mead he will be visited by three ghosts. Can you guess who they are? That’s right! The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Present, and Future. Will Connor be able to change his sleazy and lecherous ways and turn a new leaf? Or is he destined to be a sexaholic his whole life?

This is a fun little film that can be a bit off-putting at first since a lot of the comedy comes from Connor and Uncle Wayne’s misogynistic attitude towards women. But once you accept that this trait is part of who they are, the jokes and comedy get rolling quickly.

Since Warner Bros. DVDs no longer have any special features other than the choice of Widescreen or Full Screen, let’s check out what the Blu-ray edition has to offer:
