UK retail chain GAME has released it’s list of the top games of all time as voted by the customers. For the most part it could almost be explained away as the list of games most known by the public at time of release due to their respective PR campaigns. This also translates to being the highest sellers at the time which makes the list even less relevant although required.
The top 10 games voted are listed below and as can be seen none are a surprise.
Call of Duty 4 (Multiformat)
Zelda Ocarina of Time (N64)
Final Fantasy VII (PSone)
Grand Theft Auto IV (Multiformat)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
007 Goldeneye (N64)
Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
Metal Gear Solid (PSone)
Half Life 2 (Multiformat)
Gears of War (Multiformat)
The numbering of the list though is a little suspect as while Call of Duty 4 is a great game it does have limited repeat gaming appeal. Also looking at the list Goldeneye should be higher as it is a landmark title that introduced a number of gameplay elements now common in shooters. It also provided an entertaining experience with comical elements and experiences possible.
The dam base for example is one of the best comic areas of all time in an unintentionally funny way. I can’t imagine how many times I played with bullet hole placement and using grenades to try and blow up those toilets in the base.

Though i have played all but 1 of these games (metal gear) i have to dissagree with COD4 being anywhere near the greatest game of all time. The campaign was short and not that amazing. As for GTA4 i still don’t understand why it gets so many reviewers calling it one of the most amazing games ever most of the missions in it were the same thing, either go kill this guy, the guy runs away and you chase them, or generally, kill this guy for me. it was so repetative and there was still no way killing random civilians (the best part of any GTA game) without the cops chasing you and ruining things.
As for the rest, they are truely amazing games especially Ocarina of time and FFVII but wheres Resident evil 4 or Twilight Princess?
I think GTA will always be toughted as top-notch because it unlike many games gives players freedom. The freedom to choose where to go, what to do, and how to do it. Those are very hard things to do in game development. Yet GTA pulls it off and usually improves upon its offerings in every game.
I believe that Ocarina of Time was overall a much more perfected package mixing in a expansive story with gameplay to back it up. You also have to remember that OOT revolutionized how 3D action games could be played. Did Twilight Princess really do any of these? I’d say no.
