Weiner – DVD Review

Weiner

If you’ve ever considered going into politics and the 2016 Presidential Election hasn’t dissuaded you, I recommend you watch the cautionary tale that is Weiner. This fascinating documentary takes us through the tumultuous mayoral campaign of formerly disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner who you may know better as that politician who accidentally Tweeted a pic of his junk out to all his followers instead of in a private message.

Thus began his fall from grace and his eventual resignation. However, not one to be knocked down for long, Weiner rose up once again for another fight. What results is an insane narrative of self-destructive behavior, political suicide, and what not to do in a marriage. And the craziest part of it all: it’s all true!

Weiner is full of cringe-worthy moments that make you want to turn away in horror at what is happening before you…but you just can’t look away. It’s a film that gives great insight into what goes into a political campaign, but also shows how to – or in this case how not to – handle a political scandal that just won’t go away.

If you’re like me, you’ll be baffled at how crazy things get and how quickly things unravel as Anthony Weiner desperately tries to cling to the last remaining shreds of his dignity and his changes to become mayor of New York City.

Weiner is an excellent study of what not to do when it hits the fan, a thing that is almost a daily occurrence in the life of Anthony Weiner’s mayoral campaign. Again, before you consider a life in the political spotlight watch this documentary then ask yourself if you have any skeletons past or present that could derail your dream of public service.

I highly recommend Weiner. It’s a must-see for political junkies, and for anyone who enjoys salacious political scandals.

Weiner is available now on DVD!

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete First Season – Blu-ray Review

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

Time traveling superheroes!? Count me in! The first season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is a fun and fresh take on the superhero genre that is energetic, exciting, and very entertaining. I was hooked by the pilot very quickly and was intrigued by the diverse cast of characters and the myriad story possibilities that this century-hopping series had in store.

It has yet to disappoint!

Living in a dark and destructive 2166, time-traveling rebel Rip Hunter defies the council known as the Time Lords and travels back to 2016 to assemble a team of heroes to stop the rise of the evil Vandal Savage. The reluctant group of super men and women soon comes to realize that the fate of planet Earth is in their hands and they join together to do whatever it takes to but an end to Savage’s future reign of terror and universal rule.

The only problem is that Savage is on to Hunter and his team’s plan, and he and his minions do all they can to prevent Rip and his Legends of Tomorrow from thwarting his plans. Will he succeed? Will the Legends of Tomorrow help make a better future? And can the fate of the world be changed with time the forces of time are fighting against being altered?

Loaded with amazing visuals and awesome special effects, Legends of Tomorrow proves once again that DC knows how to deliver a solid TV series. And, since the Legends of Tomorrow inhabit the same universe as Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, expect cross-overs and cameos as the series gains momentum.

Special features include:

A Fantastic Voyage: Touring the Waverider Set

A tour through the Legends’ time-traveling ship with the creative team that brought it to life.

History in the Making

A behind-the-scenes look at the different eras presented in the series.

Jonah Hex: Hex Marks the Spot

A look at how the production team brought the Wild West and Jonah Hex to life on the small screen.

Ash vs. Evil Dead: The Complete First Season – Blu-ray Review

Ash National 3D Combo Packshots

In the beginning, there was Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead (1981). The cult classic begat Evil Dead II (1987), followed by Army of Darkness (1992). This Evil Dead trilogy starred Bruce Campbell, a God among B-movie lovers and an icon of cult cinema. While Raimi went on to direct the first Spider-Man trilogy and films like The Quick and the Dead, The Gift (2000), and Drag Me to Hell among others, his legacy will forever be associated with the low-budget horror-comedy trilogy. And that’s a great thing!

Thirty-four years later, Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have joined horror-comedy forces once again to bring us the gory and hilarious series, Ash vs. Evil Dead. Luckily for fans of the original trilogy the series is on Starz so you get all the blood, guts, gore, and insanity you could ask for without the pesky FCC getting in the way. And boy, are you in for a fun and entertaining treat!

After vanquishing the Evil Dead, Ash has moved on with his life as a trailer-dwelling, lady-loving, stock boy. But when he accidentally opens and reads from the Necronomicon and unleashes the Deadites once again on society, he’s called into service once more as the savior of humanity. With his trusty chainsaw affixed to his left right arm, Ash and his crew do whatever they can to stop the evil from infesting the world. This means plenty of blood will be spilled and heads will explode along the way. Will they stop the Deadites before it’s too late?

Over-the-top, excessively violent, and dripping with blood, the first season of Ash vs. Evil Dead is a high-energy series that keeps the gore flying episode after episode. And with the original Evil Dead creative team at the helm, the series retains the sensibilities and tone that made the trilogy so great.

The Blu-ray includes the following special features:

Inside the World of Ash

Spoiler Alert! A look behind-the-scenes of every episode of the season with insights from Executive Producer/Showrunner Craig DiGregorio.

How to Kill a Deadite

An interview with Bruce Campbell and fans about the myriad ways to kill Deadites. Hint: They’re all very gory!

Best of Ash

A trailer for the series.

Along with Audio Commentary on all 10 first season episodes, Ash vs. Evil Dead is a non-stop horror-comedy fest from pilot to season finale. I highly recommend it!

Lucifer: The Complete First Season – DVD Review

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Lucifer

Who ever thought a TV series about the Devil would be this much fun! Lucifer is a wildly entertaining show that takes every preconceived notion we have about the Dark Lord himself, Lucifer, and turns it on its head. He may be the ruler of the Underworld, but on this series we get to know a fresh side of this fallen angel.

Tired of running Hell, Lucifer retires and escapes to Los Angeles where he and some of his followers from his previous occupation run a swanky bar in Downtown L.A. He’s a charismatic man who charms the ladies and gets what he wants (he is the Devil after all). Along with his immortality, his penchant for getting people to tell him their darkest secrets, and his love of showing charlatans and baddies a glimpse at his true self, Lucifer has also started to develop feelings that are human in nature. This only complicates things as Lucifer finds himself inadvertently assisting in a homicide case with the LAPD. At first his presence is seen as a nuisance, but he soon proves himself to be a valuable ally in the war against the criminal element of Los Angeles.

While it plays like a standard cop procedural, Lucifer’s uniqueness given its main character is the Devil himself lends the series to a wide range of intriguing possibilities. The supernatural element also helps to elevate the comedic aspects of the series, and with Lucifer’s dry wit and his love of being Lucifer it makes each episode extremely enjoyable.

The DVD special features include:

Four Character Profiles

A closer look at four of Lucifer’s main cast.

Devilish Duo

Interviews with Tom Ellis (Lucifer) and Lauren German (Detective Chloe Decker) about their characters and their unique partnership.

Lucifer Morningstar

An interview Tom Ellis who plays Lucifer.

Lucifer 2015 Comic-Con Panel

Unaired Scenes (indicated by the “scissors” icon next to each episode selection)

Gag Reel

A wicked good time, I highly recommend Lucifer: The Complete First Season for a devilishly fun twist on the classic cop drama formula.

It’s time to get your cape on with the girls at Super Hero High in the all-new animated movie, DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Year! Much like other re-imaginings of pop culture figures, Hero of the Year brings together female superheroes and super villains from the DC Comics universe.

Alongside heroes Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and Katana we have the likes of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy attending classes with them. It’s a pretty creative concept that works well and brings these strong female characters together for an action-packed animated adventure.

During the week of the annual Hero of the Year awards show, a shape-shifting baddie named Dark Opal creates a cacophony of chaos for our collection of super kids. Together, they must work as a united force to stop Dark Opal and his apocalyptic scheme before he destroys the world and ruins the awards show. Will the girls resolve this crisis before it’s too late?

DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Year is an entertaining animated film that showcases Girl Power in all its awesome glory. There are plenty of references and nods to other DC stories and characters, plus look for cameos from the likes of Commissioner Gordon, Lois Lane, Amanda Waller, Hal Jordan (Green Lantern), and The Flash.

11 Minutes – DVD Review

11 Minutes

A lot can happen in the span of eleven minutes and in the film, 11 Minutes, a lot definitely happens. Eleven minutes at first glance appears to be a short period of time, and yet so much activity and life-changing events can take place over the course of an eleven-
minute time frame that the thought of it is pretty intense.

In the film, 11 Minutes, we are presented with a broad array of seemingly innocuous and unrelated events happening all across the city. Some are mundane activities, while others are in themselves compelling and alter the lives of those directly involved. However, the film’s chronology is encapsulated all within the same eleven minutes, which leads to a collusion of events at the climax of the film.

11 Minutes is a clever metaphor for life as we know it. While what we’re doing, thinking, working for, and reacting to is uniquely from our perspective there are millions of other people living life and doing the exact same things in any given time frame. Sometimes our lives intertwine with others around us, other times we pass them by as nameless, faceless beings sharing the same space.

Whatever happens, we are collectively connected by one singularity: Time. And when our lives within that shared time connect, intersect, or clash is when we realize that we are never truly alone in this human experience.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for the number “11” in its various incarnations throughout the film. Can you spot them all?

For a unique narrative experience, check out 11 Minutes on DVD today.
