Leaked info on Battlefield 3 shows 80-player battles, late-2008 release

It looks the waterworks just got broken, because the leaks have started afresh. DigitalBattle has gotten their murky hands on a PDF that outlines Battlefield 3’s (which has not been announced yet) features and stuff. The document was supposed to be for investors, but, ya know.

The game looks fantastic from where I stand. There will be two factions – the NATO and the Middle-Eastern Coalition, who will fight it out in “ticket-based” battles. 8 maps will be included in the release and 40 players will be the max for each team – making for a humongous 80 player standoff! Wow!

Maps will mostly be set in Middle-Eastern cities, with one map titled “Baghdad Burning”. There will be 24 vehicles per faction, (total of 48!) 17 weapons per faction and 22 unlocks – which makes for a whole lot of weapons included. The game will also introduce “Battalions” which will consist of 3-4 squads. Five classes – Five playable classes; Sniper, Assault, Engineer, Medic and Support are present – not a big surprise there.

Other features include:

  • Online stats tracking, awards and “real world ranks”
  • “Soldier” feature, looks like MMO-styled characters and avatars
  • Ranked servers will be available for resellers weeks before the game ships (for testing, apparently, ed.)
  • In-game replay and recording feature
  • VoIP, friends list, in-game IM-client and “extensive clan support”
  • Built-in auto software updater (no more patches!, ed.)

As for release and stuff – here’s what we know. It will be released in late 2008, with a teaser and announcement in January. Vista and OS X are supported, with no mention of XP (oh noes!). EA has played the diplomatic corporation and has given a stern “no comment” comment right now. We stand by for updates.

Unreal Tournament 3 beta demo coming in 2 weeks, are you ready?

Unreal Tournament 3 logo

If there is one possible thing UT fans love more than UT itself, it has to be a UT demo. UT2004’s demo, once released, became one of the most downloaded demos of all time. Even after the full release, a thick percentage of gaming servers were demo-based and the demo’s famed ONS-Torlan map became one of the most popular maps of all time, beating the original’s DM-Deck16.

Well, it’s all going to start again, because Epic’s Mark Rein has just announced that UT3’s “beta” demo will be striking the internet with a vengeance in two weeks’ time. The demo will include a Singleplayer instant action, and of course, multiplayer. Rein says that it should most likely be available this very week itself, but two weeks is just a safe number. Three is even safer – I wonder why he didn’t pick it?

One reason it’s being called the “beta” version could be because it’s the “in” thing right now, like the Gmail “beta” and the 4 dozen different Web 2.0 sites you use that are in “beta”. But Rein makes it clear that the reason of the beta demo is to test UT3 on every hardware configuration possible. What does this mean? Forget your specifications and download the demo when it comes out, run it and tell Epic how it slapped you and laughed at your low-ass PC.

Epic also announced UT3’s system requirements some weeks ago. See if your system is hip enough:

Minimum System Requirements
Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista
2.0+ GHZ Single Core Processor
512 Mbytes of System RAM
NVIDIA 6200+ or ATI Radeon 9600+ Video Card
8 GB of Free Hard Drive Space

Recommended System Requirements
2.4+ GHZ Dual Core Processor
1 GBytes of System RAM
NVIDIA 7800GTX+ or ATI x1300+ Video Card
8 GB of Free Hard Drive Space

Also, FreakyGaming reports that the “minimum specs” given are “minimum specs for high in game detail” as compared to the bare minimum specs required to run the game (and possibly play reasonably at ultra-low graphics). Regardless, it’s best that you download the beta demo and see for yourself!

Add StuffWeLike.com Blog Videos to your page

You know you have created an ad full of win when its set in World of Warcraft and has some of the most memorable lines you’ll hear in any advertisement.

“I’m gonna equip myself with a little FOUR WHEELS OF FURY!!”

“Did you see me lay down the law? I’m teh lawgiva!”

I can’t get those two lines out of my head!

Weekly games: Now with Demos!

Balls of Fury
Who needs Halo 3 when you can try out Crash Bandicoot’s newest adventure? Sure, you’ll probably rush out to buy it and stand in line at midnight for hours…oh, its out already? Well, no matter. Balls of Fury is worth the wait. I know. You’ll see.

Here’s a list of all the latest demos for your stay-at-home consoles, because hey, we all know what games are coming out. But just in case you aren’t sure, here’s some of those too.

And don’t forget that the Crysis Beta, for those of you who believe there’s a glimmer of hope of running it, can get that too. Yet in my heart, any game with the…well, balls, to be called Balls of Fury is a winner. Even if it plays like a loser.

More on Gears of War movie, PC release details and CliffyB’s thoughts on Halo

clifyb1.jpg

Cliff Bleszinski, one of the most influential personalities in game development held an open house for select journalists not long ago. Of course, we weren’t invited because we weren’t cool enough to go to the party, but turns out that we ended up getting enough information anyways. Oh internet, is there anything you cannot do?

“[Gears of War] it’s got to be a pretty f***ing hardcore movie

Gears of War, one of the Xbox 360’s best titles out there is being turned into a movie and CliffyB is making sure it does not go wrong (like Halo). When asked about the Halo movie, he says:

“I would love to see a Halo movie. You have the number one most recognizable character right now for gamers, which is Master Chief. I think in some ways Gears excites me as a movie because you have these actual characters and faces and they have their own personalities.”

Cliffy is also collaborating with Stuart Beattie, an Aussie screenwriter known for writing the abysmal spectacular scripts for Collateral, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and the upcoming 30 Days of Night. When asked about him, Cliffy says:

Stu is amazing to work with because he knows Gears inside and out. He beat the game several times and he was hooked on multiplayer. … … I think we have a really great script and now it’s just a matter of getting the right director attached and making sure it becomes a “AAA” blockbuster movie.

Typically, I’d post a cynical comment here, but seeing as we have an experienced screenwriter here, the script might actually be good. Besides, good man Cliffy won’t lie now, would he?

Another concern that is most common in game-to-movie adaptations would be of ratings. Quite often, you have an insanely gory game, which when turned into a movie becomes a family movie complete with teddy bears and pixies. Well, Cliff says that this won’t be happening.

The fact that Gears is an M-rated franchise and involves people getting chainsawed in half, it’s got to be a pretty f***ing hardcore movie.

And you know it’s going to be badass when one of the leading crew members uses profane words about it. Damn, I can’t wait to see it. Hit the jump for more about the movie, details about Gears of War for the PC (and it’s extras) and Cliffy talking some more about stuff.

World in Conflict 360 delayed; sometime 2008

Lame Boy

Why didn’t we all expect this? The huge RTS World in Conflict, which gets a great 91% average score on the PC is being delayed on the 360. Not only was it meant to come out this month, it’s now not coming out this year.

“When next year? Maybe I’ll actually have some cash around?” Not early, not first quarter. Sometime. No date’s been given, so don’t expect anything for it. Chances are that you’re like me and can’t play the PC version without the graphics being utter crap, so we’re either going to learn to live with it, or live without it.

So long as it doesn’t go all Duke Nukem Forever on us.
