Get ready for a whole new adventure in the Dragon Age universe… that isn’t just moreĀ DLC!
BioWare has just announced that Dragon Age: Origins will be getting its own expansion pack. That’s a surprising move, IMO – I thought BioWare wanted to replace expansion packs with DLC. Anyways, here’s the dope on the expansion:
Titled “Awakening”, it will take place after the Dragon Age: Origins storyline and be set in the all-new location of Amaranthine. This time, it looks like we’re headed at the very core of the Darkspawn, as BioWare says that we’ll be learning the motivations of the Darkspawn there, as well as other “secrets”. Uh, you can keep your Darkspawn secrets, thanks.
You will play the role of a Grey Warden Commander entrusted with rebuilding the Grey Wardens and uncovering the mystery of how the darkspawn survive even after you’ve killed the damned Archdemon dragon. And of course, with BioWare’s big “moral choices” theme of the series, you’ll have plenty of that to face between building the Grey Wardens and other adventures in Amaranthine. As you might have guessed, you can either choose to import your character from the core game or start afresh, whichever floats your boat.
Players will fight an intelligent and evolved breed of darkspawn as well as other creatures such as “the Inferno Golem” and “the Spectral Dragon”. You’ll also be able to customize your heroes and party in greater ways, one ability mentioned is that you can re-spec character attributes. I’m not sure what that means, really – you can change your whole attribute setup? Sounds kinda radical.
As expected, there will be new spells, abilities, items, blah blah blah, all the stuff that makes an expansionpack an expansion pack. Five all-new party members will be joining you this time and you have the choice of either starting with a brand new party or continuing your adventures from the core game.
Ray Muzyka (that’s DOCTOR Ray Muzyka to you), co-founder of BioWare explains that “the vibrant worldwide community of Dragon Age fans will relish uncovering the secret motivations of the darkspawn, revealing how the darkspawn continue to infest the world despite the defeat of the Archdemon.” Hint: it’s because BioWare said so.
So the release date for Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening has been set to… March 16, 2010! Yes, it’s coming that early because BioWare loves their fans silly. It’ll be out on all consoles that support Dragon Age and will be priced $40, at least in North America. It’s rated E by the ESRB.
No, not really.
