New Comic Releases for 11/16/2011

This comic’s week is a killer on my wallet with a whopping fifty titles on my reading list. With so many great things to point out where can I start off?

Mario’s Top Ten Picks of the Week!

10) Fear Itself #7.3 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Matt Fraction, ART BY Salvador Larocca

Another issue from the event that never seems to end, this third closing chapter of Fear Itself focuses on Iron Man and his newly returned alcoholism. What does Fraction have in-store for us and The Invincible Iron Man series? Pick this up and find out.

9) The Boys: Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker #5 (Dynamite Entertainment)
STORY BY Garth Ennis, ART BY Darick Robertson

Butcher’s origin continues to roll along and after last issue’s heartbreaking ending I really want to see what kind of crazy leads him to despise The Homelander. But mainly I want to see just how the hell it all happened with his gal in his sight the whole time. A must read!

8 ) Red Hood And The Outlaws #3 (DC Comics)
STORY BY Scott Lobdell, ART BY Kenneth Rocafort

I am a sucker for Jason Todd stories and despite all of the negative hype that an over-sexed Starfire had wrought it is actually a decent read. So these people no one had ever heard of are being killed by another group of people that no one had ever heard of but the story’s leading trio is here to make sure some bullets are introduced to brian matter.

7) Walking Dead #91 (Image Comics)
STORY BY Robert Kirkman, ART BY Charlie Adlard

Rick has learned to turn the other cheek with the help of a gun on his side, but will the truce last? Also, when the hell are we going to see some zombies? Maybe Kirkman should shift the focus to someone else for a few issues and then come back to Rick’s camp just to let the story get fresh again?

6) Mass Effect: Invasion #2 (Dark Horse)
STORY BY Mac Walters & John Jackson Miller, ART BY Omar Francia

I had originally looked forward to this series as a way to hold me over until the new game is released in March but it is actually pretty damn good on its own. Without giving away spoilers, fans of the series should really find their way to reading this as an official tale of the ME Universe and some back story on Omega Station.

5) Ultimate Comics X-Men #3 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Nick Spencer, ART BY Paco Medina, Juan Vlasco

The gang have set up at the old Morlock Tunnels but the heat is still of for all mutants. And what’s up with Wanda? I hope Quicksilver really knows what he is doing if he isnt behind her craziness.

4) Justice League #3 (DC Comics)
STORY BY Geoff Johns, ART BY Jim Lee

The flashback tale telling us how this version of the Justice League came together is going on with two of the biggest names in the game at the wheel. Sounds like a winning combo right? You would think so but the first issue had me wondering it there was such a thing as TOO much hype when it came to comics. The second issue was much better with the introduction of The Flash but I am looking forward to the big villain reveal that is coming!

3) Supergirl #3 (DC Comics)
STORY BY Michael Green & Mike Johnson, ART BY Mahmud Asrar & Bill Reinhold

Last issue’s fight with Superman was one hell of a read and I cannot wait to see what this issue has. Supergirl is still new to this Earth and apparently the last 20+ years since Krypton exploded she has been asleep so you can imagine here surprise when she is told what Superman tells her.

2) Amazing Spider-Man #674 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Dan Slott, ART BY Giuseppe Camuncoli

Now that Spider-Island is over the Sinister Six is taking this as their opportunity to do some evil or other in the name of Doctor Octopus and one of his crazy plans. Want to see how Spidey gets his block handed to him? Tune in for an all new chapter starting here!

1) Avengers #19 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Brian Michael Bendis, ART BY Daniel Acuña

The new line-up is revealed as the countdown to the Ultron War begins! Captain America has reshuffled the deck for the prime team to better suit his vision of world security after the whole Serpent fiasco. I love new beginnings as much as the next guy and Bendis has been around the block enough times to switch it up when he sees that it is getting stale. Throw in Norman Osborn and H.A.M.M.E.R. and that in one interesting mix.

Assassin’s Creed 3: A Modern Battle Against Abstergo?

**Note: This article is a theory based on available information**

This Tuesday marks the release of the fourth installment Ubisoft’s highly successful franchise, Assassin’s Creed in the form of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations but I am already looking to what the future may hold for this exciting series. While basically all of the promotional material for the games so far has focused on the gameplay featuring Ezio or Altaïr before him, we have to remember that much of the game is told through the perspective of modern day assassin Desmond Miles and his education of the order through reliving the memories of long-dead ancestors. That cannot be an accident as they seem to have taken the long road to introducing Desmond as one of the great leading characters in modern gaming.

My hat goes off to Ubisoft and the clever writers behind taking the true bad guys of the story, Abstergo Industries, and making them basically an afterthought to the overall gaming experience so far. Think about it, why have we been so exposed to all of this history and secret files, no to mention subtle story lines, if they do not plan on building them up from the start to an eventual big showdown set in modern times? Something big is in the works and has been since the very start of the first game. Maybe they did not expect the games to be so popular at first, which is why the last two games have not been numbered, but this might have been the destination all along.

It has already been announced that the next release for this series will be hitting stores next year, could this finally be the game that keeps us in the “current” world? Will we take the fight to Abstergo head-on? If you look at the evidence presented before us, such as the fact that the launch of the world-enslaving satellite “Abstergo-Eye” takes place on 12/21/12 and last week Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has stated during an investors call that the new game will bring the end of Desmond’s journey. “In Assassin’s Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That’s fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point,” Amacio said on the call. Makes lots of sense, huh?

Also, what about all of the background plot on the Animus itself? The multiplayer modes from Brotherhood and Revelations all take place the the point of view of an Abstergo employee who is going through some kind of training for something using the Animus itself as the key tool. In fact, the latest trailer for Revelations is ALL about the multiplayer and features a scientist talking about how rising through the ranks promises to unveil all that there is to know about the truth behind Abstergo. Could this be one last push at getting fans intrigued before a big announcement changing the series focus? I am not a big fan of multiplayer but if playing gets me just a little more info then I am in!

I have not been this intrigued by an alternate reality corporation since the days of the DHARMA Initiative. Even the Umbrella Corporation has nothing on the history behind these guys. The Templar Order that you spend much time fighting against in the historical periods of the game has evolved in tandem with the world around them and, using Abstergo as a front, are finally on the verge of global domination. What more can you ask for in a villain? And thanks to Desmond, the all-powerful pieces of Eden that people have shaped their world have finally resurfaced just in time for the closing number.

So tell me what you guys think, am I on to something or am I chasing the wrong waterfall? Drop a comment below or tweet us with your opinion!

Super Mario 3DS NYC Event and Giveaway

Yesterday New York City held a special tribute event to honor one of its own veterans in the ever-raging battle against despot Koopa, the man only know as Mario. The celebrated guest had a simple beginning as a humble Brooklyn plumber and part-time building superintendant who quickly and found himself engorged in an unexplained one man war against otherworldly threats. Twenty five years later, he is still going strong and now finds the retelling of his story coming to the third dimension!

Celebrating the launch of Super Mario 3D for the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo erected a very clever replica of The Mushroom Kingdom right on Military Island located in the center of Times Square. Kids were encouraged to enter the world past a massive scaled 3DS gaming system where they were allowed to climb over goombas, duck down into pipes as well as jump up to touch the floating coins and hit suspended the boxes. The course also featured those famous bullets that have faces and pipe-dwelling killer plants. Yes, my childhood has come to life.

Aside from this very cool visual experience, there was also a tent set up for passerby’s to engage in a demo of the game and system. The attendants working the booth were all dressed in hilarious white suits complete with past on moustache, clip on raccoon tails and matching ear headbands. There were also a number of people dressed up as the various Mario characters but I am not too confident on whether they were there on their own or as a part of the festivities.

Check out my photos of the event below and also please feel free to enter our giveaway for one of these hilarious stick-on Mario moustaches by filling out the form below.

Gotham City Impostors Open Beta Coming Soon

Have you ever wanted to get a gang of your friends all dressed up as The Joker and shoot Batman right in the face? Well now is your chance (sort of)! Developed by the team over at Monolith Productions (Condemned, F.E.A.R.), Gotham City Impostors is a multiplayer FPS that takes gangs of violent psychopaths dressed as The Batman against an equally deranged gathering of crazies who happened to be dressed up like the Joker and sets them loose onto the unsuspecting streets of Gotham City where they engage in war games.

Available exclusively as a download only title for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC, this highly anticipated game is set to arrive on January 10th, 2012 but there is an open beta that will be made available for those of us who cannot wait until then. As of right now there is no specific date other than “December” but you can easily sign up for the open beta by signing up here and hope that you are one of the chosen.

Having only seen a few of the options made available to us for customizing your character, I can already say that this release will be a game changer in what we might come to expect from developers to make our gaming experience truly unique to our personalities. A heavy range of body types, hair cuts, and various articles of clothing (or lack-thereof) means that it is very possible that no one out there will be quite like you. The game also features a range of challenges for both solo and multiplayer to help you level up and unlock more items, which is an expected staple in modern gaming.

I look forward to the beta and the actual release. I thought the concept was cool when I read a similar storyline in Batman: Confidential a few months ago, but now I wonder if that was sly marketing for the as-yet-to-be-announced game release. We can only wonder at this point. For detailed look at some amazing gameplay as well as a quick peek at the very in depth character customization please be sure to look at this video and stay tuned here for more information once the beta hits!

Drake – Take Care Album Review

Former Degrassi student, Jimmy Brooks, is back with his second studio release. Following up on his 2010 debut album Thank Me Later, Drake’s Take Care was (to me at least) one of the more highly anticipated albums that had me feeling both nervous and excited with each song released via underground mix tapes, leaks, and official singles on the radio stations. The first album came to me as an unexpected surprise, with each song freshly hitting my ears at the same time, but this time around I found myself actively looking for new samples of what was to come.

So how did it stack up? Well, in all honesty it was a far more grown-up album than what I had expected. Everything seems as though it was put together in a thoughtful and precise manner. The beats for the most part are mellow and low, often reflecting the mood of the mature content reflected in the lyrics. His flow is laid back on several of the songs, almost leaning more towards R&B than rap, but there are a few tracks in which he does speed it up to keep the more aggressive fan base amused (which I feel is not the direction he goes to by default). The words more than anything are the selling point for Drake. What he has to say is more important than how he does it. His words reflect an old soul who is weary on the fame but is hopelessly addicted to the power it brings at the expense of alienating loved ones and sabotaging any chance of a lingering love interest, past, present, and future.

Featuring guest spots from the usual suspects such as Rihanna, Nicki Manaj, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne, as well as others I have not heard much from if anything at all like The Weeknd and Stevie Wonder, this album does a nice blend of back and forth between Drake and the other musicians rather than engaging in a pissing match over who is the better lyricist.

All in all this album is a keeper for those of you who are more into a grown, down to Earth feeling album. While there are one or two potential banger tracks to fill the quota needed in today’s rap game, this album truly is more of a thinking man’s record. If you are looking for something to cruise around with or game to this is not the album you would want to put on, but I suggest you give Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV a spin, which also happens to feature two tracks featuring Drake. Plus, look at that album cover. Doesn’t he look like a depressed Columbian kingpin? Not bad for a former child actor from Toronto.

New Comics Releases for Wednesday 11/9/2011

It all begins here (again) as the future direction of Marvel is finally unveiled in the much advertised Point One one-shot book. Aside from that, the rest of the week is pretty “meh” with a few gems here and there to keep it interesting.

Mario’s Top Ten Picks of the Week

10) MAGNETO: NOT A HERO #1 of 4 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Skottie Young, ART BY Clay Mann

My all-time favorite villain gets another mini-series, this time courtesy of first time writer Skottie Young. I am not really concerned on who writes the book as much as I am with the characters involved but if his writing is as good as his art then we shall be in safe hands. Plus, look at the title of the series. Not A Hero? Hopefully that is a preview of what we will see inside!

9) BATGIRL #3 (DC Comics)
STORY BY Gail Simone, ART BY Ardian Syaf, Vicente Cifuentes

Nightwing is such a Dick 8)

8 ) PUNISHERMAX #19 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Jason Aaron, ART BY Steve Dillon

All of the players on the field are closing around Fisk and I can’t wait to see him meet his demise in the most glorious way. Not since Gustavo Fring have I both cheered and booed a story’s villain that was so cunning, conniving, and charismatic all while keeping an air of humanity about him. Aaron, I bow down to your excellence.

7) UNCANNY X-FORCE #17 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Rick Remender, ART BY Jerome Opena

Archangel is coming close to bringing hell on Earth and the team is all but defeated. I sense that Wolverine is going to maim a bro or two in this issue to balance the scales. I am appreciating the use of Age of Apocalypse characters (although Ice Man being evil suddenly through me for a loop) to fill in for characters that have already been dispatched in the regular Marvel Universe, as well as the appearance of Holocaust in the 616. This story arc has definitely been satisfactory on the action that was promised, i only hope that the momentum continues in this issue and onto the next story.

6) BATMAN AND ROBIN #3 (DC Comics)
STORY BY Peter Tomasi, ART BY Pat Gleason

BATMAN AND ROBIN!!!!!! That’s all I need to sell this.

5) GREEN LANTERN #3 (DC Comics)
STORY BY Geoff Johns, ART BY Doug Mahnke

Sinestro shows up on Earth and schools Hal on how to use the ring to rescue people in peril? My, how the people of Earth in the DCU are forgetful. With the assault on the Yellow Lantern stronghold of Korugar (Sinestro’s old crew AND home planet) coming up I hope to see this series capture that spark that I have not been feeling lately.

4) TERMINATOR ROBOCOP KILL HUMAN #4 of 4 (Dynamite Entertainment)
STORY BY Rob Williams, ART BY P.J. Holden

I do not want to see this series end! Dynamite, you better bring Williams and Holden back for round two. The last issue showed Murphy rescuing The Connors from the dreaded T-1000 in an elaborate set-up that only experienced fans of how time travel works will understand. I am curious to see how this explosive series ends but I really hope it is more of a BANG than a fizzle.

3) ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #4 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Brian Michael Bendis, ART BY Sara Pichelli

The last issue ended with Miles getting the news that Peter Parker was just shot on the Queensboro Bridge, so I really hope we see him put on the costume (or that makeshift one we saw in Ultimate Fallout) sometime soon. Pichelli’s english may not be the tightest but she more than makes up for that with her art work, and Bendis is Bendis. Much like a comic book writing Jay Z, he has been around forever and if you don’t dig him by this point you are just a hater (just kidding).

2) PIGS #3 (Image Comics)
STORY BY NATE COSBY & BEN McCOOL, ART BY BRENO TEMURA

The next generation of terrorism is here, and apparently it has always been there waiting for the right moment to strike. This series is such a highly detailed look at a world where the Cold War rages on that I am kind of suspicious on what Cosby and McCool are really up to. Pick this issue up (and the first to for that matter), you will thank me later. Oh, and Amanda Connor’s cover is pretty slick, huh?

1) POINT ONE #1 (Marvel Comics)
STORY BY Brian Michael Bendis, Jeph Loeb, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction , David Lapham , Fred Van Lente , and Christopher Yost, ART BY Ed McGuinness, Bryan Hitch, Terry Dodson, Roberto De La Torre , Ryan Stegman , and Javier Pulido

So what does 2012 have in store for Marvel? Check out this one book to get the scoop. One of the reason that I love these larger titles comprised of short stories is that it is kind of a sampler platter for new readers and a preview of new tales t come for long time fans. While it is NOT necessary to read this book I highly suggest that you do so when something comes back around over the next few months you will know the full story of the “Who’s” and “Why’s” involved.
