Heartbeats (Les Amours Imaginaires) – Movie Review

A review of the french film Heartbeats(Les Amours Imaginaires) following it’s trip to Cannes and a myriad of other festivals.

Tis the season for romance. A new year, spring with the sun shining, and even tomorrow being Valentine’s Day it seems only appropriate that I was taken on a journey through the life of three friends in a modern exploration of what love truly entails.

The film Les Amours Imaginaires or Heartbeats, is simply that. A love story that is shared when two friends both fall for the same individual. While the plot does nothing groundbreaking, the realistic acting and dialogue help bring the film to life like no other romance film has.

The story circles around Francis and Marie as they try their very hardest to not fall for the mysterious “self-acclaimed Adonis” that is Nicolas. There is a bit of predictability though when the duo are first talking about him, both coming to conclusion that he supposedly not their type; and that is where the story begins. Nicolas, a very happy go lucky individual, doesn’t seem to favor either in any way, but there are certain nuances about him when he’s with the duo that would suggest otherwise. It isn’t long for both Marie and Francis to fall, and fall hard. Cue the struggle not only with themselves as they try and vie for a man’s attention whose aspirations in life seem to be that of wishing to not be tied down, coupled with the war between one another as they attempt to garner his affections, it seems you have quite the debacle. The rest of the film follows classic suit of watching them struggle until in the end a conclusion that fits all three perfectly comes about. While this story by no means is terribly unique, everything the filmmaker does thrusts the film forward into a list of films in my heart that involve the words breath taking, beautiful and deep.

One of the biggest things that is prominent throughout the film is the use of cinematography to really show off the story. Xavier Dolan knows exactly what to do behind and in front of the camera as one of the few directors that can really act and bring their work to a believable level. With stunning use of color, depth of field and with, an albeit a bit too much slow motion; Heartbeats is a visually stunning spectacle that ensnares the viewer and takes them on the journey through pure visual exploration. To say Dolan knows how to make art would be an understatement.

The film as a whole has very minor defects, as previously mentioned the use of slow motion nearly every five to ten minutes, was a bit much. However another thing bothered me that actually couples with that last sentiment. Every now and again in the film you see Marie and Frankie become intimate with some random individual. Once again Dolan uses color to suggest the mood in the room. Red for passion, green for envy, yellow for bitterness and blue for sadness, all work really well. However if you are going to do that, at least make the scene somewhat enjoyable. It was very awkward to sit there and watch characters I’d fallen in love with be in these situations where it was extremely apparent that they did not enjoy this individuals company. Other than that with a mix of some somber music the scenes are still at least good, but a little less enticing than the other portions of the film.

The characters were fantastic, all believable, all well acted and I actually would miss every single one when they weren’t on screen. With the lovely trio beginning to rip at the seams you see that a bit more rapidly which in turn ripped my heart out as well. Marie with her snide comments and “I’m better than everyone in this room” (while maintaining a sense of shyness) was simultaneously charming and vicious to watch. Frankie, with his struggling coping with being a homo sexual who has been “marked” plenty of times is a deep character that when I originally sat down for the film did not expect to see. As the other characters fell in love with Nicolas, I couldn’t help to avoid it either. His charm, intellect but also mysteriousness really plays into the core of attraction which first ensnares both Frankie and Marie to him. The characters are a brilliant balanced triangle to say the absolute least, and bit off kilter as a whole because of the unique predicament they all find themselves in.

When I first saw the trailer for Heartbeats, I had no doubt in my mind that I would love it. With a brilliant soundtrack, absolutely stunning use of the camera, and terrific acting and dialogue this is sure enough to entice all lovers of romance, film, and the French language. Xavier Dolan, has now been to Cannes film festival twice, and will more than likely continue returning there if he continues on this route. I have no doubt in my mind we will be seeing nothing but incredible work coming from Dolan for quite some time. All in all, do your best to see this film, even if it doesn’t sound exactly for you, you’ll at least find some charm in every single scene.

Heartbeats will be released in theaters on February 25th, 2011.

Super 8 Looks Super Spectacular

We take a look at the new teaser for Super 8.

So with no surprises today Green Bay won the Super Bowl! Yay, now that we have that boring stuff out of the way let’s talk movies. Today during the Super Bowl a plethora of different commercials and advertisements showed throughout the duration of the game. However it seems one in particular (no we are not talking about the Darth Vader Volkswagen commercial) is on everyone’s mind. That being J.J. Abram’s (Star Trek, Cloverfield, Lost) new film, Super 8.

While nothing is deeply revealed about the film as a whole J.J Abrams did release a bit of the story to tantalize us along with the stunning looking teaser.

“The Paramount Pictures release is set in Ohio in 1979 and introduces a troupe of six youngsters who are using a Super 8 camera to make their own zombie movie. One fateful night, their project takes them to a lonely stretch of rural railroad tracks and, as the camera rolls, calamity strikes — a truck collides with an oncoming locomotive and a hellacious derailment fills the night with screaming metal and raining fire. Then something emerges from the wreckage, something decidedly inhuman.”

Sounds interesting right? Now check out the trailer below to let me know what you think.

My first thoughts are The Goonies meets E.T. and of course The Thing. Overall I love the idea of a period monster movie and I feel this will be a big hit over the summer. J.J. Abrams I bow to you as summer blockbuster king, don’t stop now and don’t stop rolling the film on Super 8.

What? Gordon-Levitt still in talks for TDKR?

Recent word about Gordon-Levitt joining the cast.

According to Deadline.com, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is still in talks to play an unspecified role in Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. For many months, it had been heavily rumored that Gordon-Levitt was up for consideration to play the villain in the film, and that the villain would be The Riddler. But last month, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that Tom Hardy would be joining the cast as the villain Bane. Word of Gordon-Levitt joining the cast is a huge mystery now, given that Nolan himself has stated that The Riddler would not be in the film, and that The Joker is Heath Ledger’s legacy and would not be seen again. So what does this mean? Who will we see appear? Another villain (alongside Selina Kyle and Bane)? Or maybe he’ll play a good guy? Who knows… maybe we’ll see The Boy Wonder…

What are your hopes for this? Tell us what you think below!

Top 5 Releases for February: Film

This months top 5(good and bad) releases for film in theaters!

1. Just Go With It (In Theaters February 11th, 2011) – Adam Sandler throughout the years has either enticed us with his comedic value or turned us off completely (see Happy Gilmore as opposed to Eight Crazy Nights) It seems though this time he will be returning to his roots of charming romantic comedies. With a plethora of those already under his belt Just Go With It looks to be another fun trip to the theaters with a date. The basic story is a man uses a fake wedding ring to pick up women. When he finally meets the girl of his dreams he must pretend with his friend that he’s getting a divorce. Simple enough yes? Things become more and more complicated as well as more and more ridiculous (you can judge for yourself in the trailer). With what I’m sure will be a predictable ending, it will at least be another film you can appreciate on Valentine’s Day with your date. Whether you are forced to go or not you’ll probably have some fun.

2. Cedar Rapids (In Limited Theaters February 11th, 2011) – For those of you who don’t know, Sundance Film Festival came to an end a few days ago, and it seems one of the already buzz worthy films is being released. Cedar Rapids is about a meek insurance salesman and his unique transformation from the boring mundane existence he once had to an ultimate party animal all thanks to one man and one location. Through drunken parties, “straight up gangster” situations, and rock climbing adventures. Cedar Rapids is shaping up to be a great trip to the theaters akin to The Hangover and Get Him To The Greek. If you’re looking for a great comedy movie that probably has some significant heartfelt moments, this one is for you (and maybe your lady for a Valentine’s date). Let’s just say this film has two bags of super awesome coming our way.

3. Unknown (In Theaters February 18th, 2011) – Liam Neeson. Even when you say his name you can’t help but feel awesome. Covering all kinds of different genres, there is one thing that links them all together. Liam Neeson is awesome and Unknown looks to be like his other film Taken but with that extra cerebral umph! Upon waking up from a coma, Liam discovers that someone has taken his identity. Though he struggles to recover who he is, it seems it’s much deeper than anticipated when even his wife doesn’t know who the good Doctor is. All with mindboggling twists abounding, Unknown looks to be either a fan favorite or a big flop (similar to The Box) of last year. Let’s hope Neeson can pull it out of the bag and give us a Taken 1.5 as we patiently await its sequel.

4. Drive Angry 3D (In Theaters February 25th, 2011) – Oh boy! From the director of the classic American cinema film My Bloody Valentine, comes a film to equally shatter the world of filmmaking as we know it. When a con breaks out of hell to go seek vengeance on someone who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter, there will be hell to pay. But who could pull of such a feat? Who is the man with the grand master plan to exact his red hot revenge? Why none other than the Ghostrider himself, Nicholas Cage. With all these new supernatural action films under his belt it seems that Nicholas Cage has jumped off the boat that was once “serious acting” and is now going for the ridiculous. I’m going to admit something though; this looks to be like a lot of fun. With puns aplenty, terrible dialogue, explosions and ALL IN 3D? You can count me in for this spring’s sure to be box office flop. And really, I’m not kidding.

5. Hall Pass (In Theaters February 25th, 2011) – Out of all the other comedies coming out this month, this one is looking to be the weakest. Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers and Zoolander) plays a married man who believes he and his friend can get anyone they want if given the opportunity. Lo and behold that exact situation arises and they are given a “hall pass” (an exemption from the rules of marriage for one week). Upon hearing this they go out exploring, looking for that long sought after forbidden fruit. Shenanigans ensue and some low brow jokes are thrown in, but it seems this film will be carried mostly on the shoulders of the once great comedic actor Wilson. Paired with a no name this film doesn’t look to impress that much, but it may be good for a few laughs here and there. Maybe it’s because I haven’t been married or maybe it’s just that January and February are slow months for the film industry; who knows? Might be one to check out for a few bucks, but don’t pay full price or I’ll have to reimburse you.
