Who wants to eat at GameWorks?!

GameWorks

I’m sure that’s the question that all American families go through… I know it’s a tough decision but apparently Sega wants people to eat at its arcades… Read on for the full press release.

Sega Entertainment USA, Inc. is ready to compete in the casual dining arena. The company, which operates five different restaurant concepts nationally inside its GameWorks chain of entertainment locations, is confident that their restaurants can compete with other casual dining establishments. What is their edge? According to Clint Manny, Senior Vice President of Marketing, the answer is simply, “More.”

“We offer more than the typical restaurant,” stated Manny. “We know that our restaurant experience and food quality compete with those in traditional casual dining, but we truly offer our guests more. Take the guest experience at any other casual dining competitor, it’s a drink, an appetizer, a meal, dessert (maybe) and out the door…… with great restaurants, bars, entertainment, sports viewing and interactive games and attractions that can’t be duplicated at home, we give guests more of everything they want – and they won’t have to leave to get it. We will succeed by providing excellent food quality, delivering exciting new food and beverage programs, unique entertainment and establishing in consumer minds that more is better at the Grill in GameWorks.”

Big-time Iraqi cleric loves video games!

Muqdata al-Sadr is a famous Iraqi Shi’ite cleric and has a rather radical personality to boot. He’s well known for criticizing the American presence in Iraq, but apparently he has another passion. Playing video games.

In the July 9 issue of Time, Joe Klein writes One Last Chance, a report on U.S. General David Petraeus and the situation of the “surge” by American forces. Here, writes:

But the most important man in Iraq is the other Shi’ite prince, Muqtada al Sadr, who is 33 and the nominal leader of the most powerful militia in the country, the Mahdi Army. Al-Sadr is often called mercurial – he’s supposedly a fervent video game player – …

I wonder what side he picks in Counter-Strike…

More info on Fallout 3!

Fallout 3

Ever since Bethesda acquired Fallout 3, it has remained more or less in mystery. Cut to last month – a new trailer and some magazine scans reveal the successor to the famous Fallout line of video games.

For the uninitiated, Fallout is a post-apocalyptic RPG that achieved immense fame because of its innovations and its excellent and open-ended gameplay. Fallout 2 was even more popular and spin-offs followed it but Black Isle didn’t look at Fallout 3. The rights were sold to Bethesda, makers of the massively famous Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

To summarize a few facts, Fallout 3 will be set in post-apocalyptic United States and as the teaser proved, the atmosphere is in tune with previous Fallout games. You once again don the uniform of a vault-dweller, who has lived all his (or her) life in an underground ‘vault’ and then undertakes a major quest. The game will use a unique combat system, which can be described as a cross between first-person shooting and turn-based action (like in previous Fallout games).

WiiWare

Wii

No this isn’t a hack for your Wii, this is a new channel that Nintendo will be releasing soon that contains new independent games available for download. Obviously this is an attempt to compete with Xbox Live Arcade as well as the PS3 online service.

The question is how will Nintendo differentiate itself from the competition, not only in variety of games, but in how they help indie developers create games for their system. It isn’t clear where exactly Nintendo wants to take this channel. If they want the support of hobbyists like Microsoft is doing with XNA. If Nintendo is, then they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them.

Considering the amount of retro games that have been downloaded since launch  – over 4 million – via the Virtual Console, WiiWare could be a great addition to help the industry create some very unique and original titles.

Hopefully all of these new games will not be mini-game related… This announcement also brings up the issue of storage. Who really wants to have tons of memory cards full of random games? Hopefully Nintendo will release a harddrive attachment.  🙄
