Star Wars: Force Unleashed Movie Up Next?

Force Unleashed, for all the reviews it got, ended up being a success, with a whopping 1 million unit sales in a mere 5 days. If anything, it goes to show that people still buy Star Wars. While Metacritic gave it a score of around 70 on different platforms, LucasArts seems to be unfazed by the criticism.

So does that warrant a movie version?! After watching (and shaking my head profoundly) at Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie, I can’t help but think how Force Unleashed can possibly be a great movie. Except maybe if the entire movie was about slicing and throwing people with the Force. But since its Star Wars, I doubt if Lucas will approve that.

Force Unleashed already got a comic book adaptation and a bestselling novel, oh and an artbook as lavish as a full-fledged movie. So it would it be surprising if LucasFilms announced out of the blue that they’ve decided to make a movie on Force Unleashed?

Haiden Blackden, project leader and Sith Lord of Force Unleashed says that a movie version would be an “testament to the priorities and sophisticated ideas of his team”. “It’s an incredible time,” he said, “to be telling powerful stories in this fairly young medium.” Well, I don’t know, Blackden, but storywise, I’d watch a Knights of the Old Republic movie first. Hell, I’d watch a Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast movie first.

Games as history

Remember Pac Man? the original cool yellow dude around before Homer Simpson? Well, he is one of those gaming characters which will be remembered for the ages. He will be around in history museums with big cool boards teaching 8 year olds about his rise to fame and how he was the big thing at time of the release. Now we have had Master Chief as a big icon but the fact is most of the games coming out now don’t have memorable characters. Even the most hardened gamer will find it difficult to remember all the character names of the player characters in the current big releases like BioShock for example.

Perhaps this will be a sign of future things to come with big action becoming more important than character development. The thought to be left with is, when the future comes around and people look back at the big gaming icons from the ’00s which big characters will be seen to represent us now? Let’s hope it’s something as positive as Pac Man.

As a fun easy quiz, what are the player character names in these games? (no prize, answers after the continue click)

1) Stranglehold

2) Halo

3) Half Life

4) Call of Duty 4 (x2)

EA publicity stunt fails to impress.

The web is buzzing with reviews for Mercenaries 2 and while my opinions are not decided yet an interesting story has come to our attention. On Friday the 3rd September EA took over a London petrol station near Finsbury Park and completely transformed it into a military style bunker. Going as far as to include oil barrels, sandbag walls and costumed actors to pump the petrol.

What they failed doing when giving away their £20,000 of free petrol to anyone who came along was choosing a good location. As anyone who has been to London knows there is no space anywhere so having 20 cars down the middle of a road waiting to get their free £40 of fuel caused a huge number of complaints including the local MP speaking out. Temperatures increased and those drivers in the queue started swapping abuse with those trying to get past so chaos was close by the whole time. What made this even less impressive was while the promotion began around 7:30 in the morning the press release to announce it was to take place didn’t go out until 9:11am local time. This meant that it was too late for most media outlets to assign reporters, let alone camera crews to go along and film the story. As anyone in PR should know you need to provide several days notice at the least when an event is to take place as the very minimum the press requires is to figure out a way to get to the site and plan interview questions etc.
