If StuffWeLike.com were a sitcom, it would be The Big Bang Theory, the endearing comedy about hopelessly nerdy physicists who pretty much like everything that we like.

Johnny Galecki’s Leonard is the emotional center of the show. When Penny (Kaley Cuoco), an attractive young woman, moves into the apartment across the hall, Leonard is instantly smitten. His pursuit of the girl of his dreams forms the spine of the first season.

Producing for television is a grueling endeavor dictated by merciless deadlines and limited budgets. Therefore, I’m always amazed when a program comes along that pushes the boundaries of the medium and approaches the production values normally reserved for the movies.

Pushing Daisies is just such a series. Inventively written, beautifully shot and wonderfully acted, the show is something of a minor miracle. How did something this special make it to the small screen?

It may be difficult to comprehend now, but it was only two years ago that many in the video game world had given Nintendo up for dead. Despite the early success of the DS handheld, the company’s Gamecube had finished in distant third vs. its same generation competitors. And with the next generation of consoles dawning, the XBox 360 was lighting up the charts and the Playstation 3 was about to become reality. Then at E3 2006, Nintendo unveiled the Wii and the rest is history.

While nothing unveiled at this week’s Siggraph conference in Los Angeles will have that level of mainstream consumer impact, the event may feature a similar underdog story that will have far-reaching consequences for the business of video game development.
