Zohan is a romcom in the traditional sense. As an Israeli commando, Adam Sandler stars as Zohan a man who would rather cut hair than cut down terrorists.

So to pursue his dream Zohan fakes his own death and moves to New York armed with only a 20 year old book of modern hair styles. After a reality check, Zohan finds himself working for a Palestinian owned hair salon in the city and his love interest Emmanuelle Chriqui. Essentially the movie is a film making fun of Israeli culture and stereotypes in addition to a few spoofs on the other side. It’s a political minefield but thankfully Zohan manages to be a comedy first, drama second.

As to if it’s any good as a film, one watch appears to be the correct answer. It’s enjoyable enough to maintain your interest but unless heavily captivated by the cultural jokes it’s just as forgettable as most recent comedy movies like Yes Man. As for the political aspects, for a film with the old message “give peace a chance” it’s DVD release being during the current troubles is certainly of note.

Next we come to the DVD itself. There are a couple of commentary tracks, 10 featurettes and several deleted scenes included. The commentaries are interesting enough with some real information about the making of the movie with just a few “he was great” comments. The featurettes are fun enough and the deleted scenes are mostly cultural jokes so it’s easy to see why they were cut from the final version.

Is Zohan worth seeing? Absolutely. Is it worth a purchase? Only for heavy fans of Sandler or those into cultural jokes, for everyone else rent first.
