Mike Myers has always been a beacon of light for comedians everywhere and a guaranteed sign of a good movie. Now we have his latest idea with The Love Guru. There’s a story here which simply involves him wanting to be the #1 self help guru in the world and to do so he needs a big PR stunt. This leads to the events covered in the film and his being approached by Jessica Alba as the owner of the Maple Leafs who needs a players broken heart fixed so he will win the Stanley Cup. It’s generic stuff complete with a ton of celebrity cameos from those wanting to be part of a Mike Myers comedy.
As a movie it’s fairly entertaining stuff. There are several really good jokes but a lot of those included are just for padding and lack any real comic timing. Justin Timberlake is also in this movie as an annoying hockey player but his involvement really doesn’t add much bar having the ability to use some fairly extreme stereotyping and having
someone to laugh at, not with.
It’s easy to imagine that Love Guru was intended to show that Mike Myers still has it in a post-Austin Powers world. The problem is Love Guru doesn’t have enough good material to make an essential purchase so it’s a rental first and purchase second. Extras include a number of extremely short featurettes, delete scenes blooper reel and the trailer.
