Review: Two and a Half Men Season 4 DVD

Posted October 17th by guestblogger in DVD, Reviews, TV Shows

The men men men men manly men men men are back. Charlie, Alan and Jake return for more in the Season 4 DVD set. Chalked full of episodes that will you laughing out loud and asking for more. The DVD set contains 24 episodes plus 2 episodes with cast commentaries, a gag reel and a sit down with the two creators of Two and a Half Men, Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn.

Season four starts off right where season three left off. For those of you who aren’t such aficionados of the show like me, I’ll give you a quick reminder of how season three ended. Charlie had convinced Mia to elope with him in Vegas. However, right before the ceremony, Charlie and Mia get into an argument about the living conditions once they are married. Mia wants Alan and Jake to move out of Charlie’s house so that Charlie and she can start a family.

Although, Charlie finds Alan more of a nagging inconvenience and Jake a walking methane cloud, he has grown accustom to them and wants them to stay. This argument leads to Charlie and Mia calling off the wedding. Not to be left out though, Alan gets swept away in the moment and decides to marry Kandy. Which in effect means that Alan and Jake are moving out and would have saved Charlie’s and Mia’s wedding had they known. But knowing Charlie’s antics throughout the show, karma was bound to catch up to him eventually. To make things even worse for Charlie, as the newlyweds are walking around the casino, Alan hits the jackpot on a slot machine, winning $500,000.

So this is where we start off in season four. Now free of Alan’s nagging, complaining, and mooching, as well Jake’ s constant appetite and let’s say slightly below average IQ, Charlie reverts back to his natural state: a boozehound and manwhore. That is until Alan shows up on his doorstep, broke and getting divorced. Talk about déjà vu.

So with Alan and Jake moving back in, Charlie can no longer “have fun having sex on the washing machine. Hubdaba hubdaba!” Charlie also goes through some scary moments like almost drowning in the ocean (trying to pick up a cute surfer chick of course) and is convinced that he saw his dead father’s floating head and that he told Charlie to take care of his mother.

It also wouldn’t be a true Two and a Half Men show unless Charlie had some romantic relationship problems. One girl Charlie dates has an odd resemblance in personality to his mother, but he is the only one who doesn’t see it. Another, a girl about half Charlie’s age, reveals to him that he is getting older and it is harder for him to keep up with the young girls that he usually goes after. If you are a consistent watcher of the show, you will come to see that there is almost no girl that Charlie would not go after, including Judith’s new stepsister Myra.

Not to be outdone, Alan has plenty of his own problems in season four. He has to deal with his own divorce with Kandi, insomnia, relationship problems and even his sexuality. Fresh from his most recent divorce, Alan fights with Kandi about selling the condo they bought so he doesn’t go broke and even about the dog they owned together. At the same time, Alan is suffering from insomnia which his psychiatrist says could be from his jealousy and anger of how Charlie skates through life with no consequences. What’s more, Alan deals with his many relationship problems and even starts to question that he is heterosexual. To make matters worse, right when Alan can see “the light at the end of the alimony tunnel”, Herb, Judith’s fiancé, played by Ryan Stiles, starts to have second thoughts about marrying Judith. Besides all these problems, Alan has to deal with Jake and all the problems he brings.

In season four, Jake continues to mature and even starts to understand some of Alan and Charlie’s sexual jokes (although he still has problems with basic math). As he matures, Jakes also starts showing interest in the opposite and has crushes on two girls during the show. To make things even more awkward, he hears his mom and Herb having sex and asks his father questions about sex. Jake even takes on his uncle Charlie when Charlie decides to hit on the mom of a girl he has a crush on. Jake is an important character in the show and Angus T. Jones plays him well, however Charlie Sheen and John Cryer carry most of the show and at times Jake’s lines seem a little too scripted in this season.

Co-created by executive producers Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn, Two and a Half Men is a brilliant show that appeals to any demographic. I was lucky enough to actually go and see a taping of one of the episodes (Meander to Your Dander). I even got a tour of the set after taping because one of my friends new a cameraman. It was a great environment and it shows in the quality of show they produce. The season four DVD just proves the quality of show it is and I highly recommend others to buy it. The blend of supporting characters such as Conchata Farrell, Holland Taylor, Marin Hinkle and more with Sheen, Cryer, and Jones is just a perfect match.

The only thing I ask that they improve in the season five DVD set is to have more extra features with personal interviews with characters on the show. This will give viewers a closer relationship with the characters they love.

Starring Charlie Sheen, John Cryer and Angus T. Jones. Also starring Conchata Ferrell, Holland Taylor, April Bowlby and Marin Hinkle.
