Event Review: The Purge – Fear the Night

The Purge - Fear the Night

A truly unique and thrilling experience, The Purge: Fear the Night is an event worth checking out this Halloween. Based on the recent movie, The Purge, this interactive horror adventure brings you into the world of the movie in a way most amusements of this type rarely do. Unlike traditional mazes like the awesome ones at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, you are part of the action. You have to find things, do things, engage with and answer questions from the performers. It’s really quite fun and intense at the same time.

Just in case you don’t know, The Purge is about a twelve-hour period once a year where all crime is legal in the United States. You can kill, steal, vandalize, do whatever you want without legal consequences. Fear the Night takes place eight years before the events of the film, which stars Ethan Hawke.

My friend and I arrived at the Variety Arts Theater in Los Angeles, California and were in awe of the massive historical structure that towered over us. The event itself takes you up and down six-floors and over 70,000 square feet of action, and this was the perfect space to make that happen. After checking in and receiving our info packet and badges, we headed up in the elevator to the bar for drinks and a chance to meet the creators of the events, which included Blumhouse Productions CEO, Jason Blum.

It was then time for the event, which takes place the night of the Purge in the near future. I don’t want to give very much away. This is an intense experience that has lots of great scares and adrenaline-fueled moments that I don’t want to spoil. What I will say is that you are taken hostage by a heavily armed group called the Constitutionalist and you must follow their orders throughout your time in the maze. You’re up, you’re down, you’re running, you’re ducking; it’s can be a very physical ordeal at times.

Apparently, the original version of the maze had guests wandering through with little or no guidance. I can see why they changed it since there is a lot of area to cover and a person could get confused or lost trying to figure out where to go. Heck, we had one of the performers with us and we STILL went the wrong way a few times!

The Purge: Fear the Night is a lot of fun. While it may be too intense for some, it’s an experience well worth having this Halloween due to its unique nature and just to see how this interactive world comes to life with plenty of pulse-pounding moments. I highly recommend you check out The Purge: Fear the Night from Blumhouse Productions.

The event runs Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays with expanded hours during Halloween week. The next round starts October 17, 2013 at 7:15pm, with entry periods continuing every 15 minutes. For tickets, entry times, and additional info, check out www.purgelive.com.
