DVD Review: Mike & Molly – The Complete Third Season

Mike & Molly: The Complete Third Season DVD

I got to be a part of the studio audience for the season three premiere. I have been to many TV tapings since moving to Los Angeles, and Mike & Molly was a hilarious and really awesome experience because I got to me meet the cast after the show and get their autographs (see pic of program below!). So you’ll have to forgive me if I’m a bit biased about how much I enjoy this show, but I really do love Mike & Molly!

At the end of season one, Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) and Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy) got engaged after a whirlwind romance that began at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. During season two the couple moved into Molly’s house with her sexy, pothead sister, Victoria (Katy Mixon), wine-loving mom, Joyce (Swoozie Kurtz), and Joyce’s fiancée, Vince (Louis Mustillo). By the end of the season Mike and Molly were married.

Onward to season three, which finds our newlyweds still very much in love and toying with the idea of starting a family. Everyone, of course, has to throw their two cents in including Mike’s partner and best friend, Carl (Reno Wilson), Mike’s mom, Peggy (Rondi Reed), Carl’s Grandma (Cleo King), Mike and Carl’s friend and long-suffering waiter at Abe’s Hot Beef, Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi), and everyone in Molly’s family. Will Mike and Molly succeed in getting pregnant? You’ll have to watch and find out.

Joining the cast on a more regular basis are Mike and Molly’s friend, Harry (David Higgins) who has more than a few surprises for everyone this season. We also get to meet Mike’s boss, Captain Patrick Murphy, played by Major Dad himself, Gerald McRaney.

Like the previous two seasons, season three flies by at a fast and breezy pace with equal amounts of raunchy hilarity and sentiment mixed together. It’s a series that is refreshing in its familiarity; a series that takes old school sitcom situations and conventions and breathes new life into them. Mike & Molly has the feel of an 80s sitcom, but with a 21st century mentality at its core.

The series is definitely not for those looking for family-friendly, politically correct entertainment. Mike & Molly is loaded with sex jokes, innuendos, crude metaphors, and lots of gross out jokes. These are all the reasons I love the show. Some of the lines and situations that happen in a few episodes have made me say out loud, “I can’t believe they got away with doing/saying that on CBS!” I love it!

Rondi Reed, Suzy Q, and Melissa McCarthy

Mike & Molly also has a very diverse cast and an eclectic group of performers that bring this particular style of broad comedy to life in a vivid and energetic manner. You can really tell that this cast is having fun and really enjoy what they are doing. They are a fantastic ensemble with a rock solid chemistry no matter what characters are paired together.

Cleo King and Swoozie Kurtz

My top three favorite episodes this season had to be, “Vince Takes a Bath,” “Molly’s Birthday,” and “Thanksgiving is Cancelled.” While each episode has its moments, these three – especially “Vince Takes a Bath” – had me laughing out loud. Good stuff!

Disc three includes a Gag Reel, which is a lot of fun.

For some raunchy, heartwarming hilarity, I highly recommend Mike & Molly: The Complete Third Season on DVD and Blu-ray August 20, 2013! It’s by far one of the best sitcoms on TV today!
