Movie Review: Iron Man 3

Where to begin. Where to begin. We’ve come a long way since the beginning of Marvel’s Phase One, which kicked off with the first Iron Man back in 2008. Since then we have seen a flurry of Marvel movies including Iron Man 2, Captain America, and Thor, all culminating with 2012’s The Avengers. Phase One was a box office and, for the most part, critical success (the lowest rated of the first series being Iron Man 2 at 73%).

It was time to initiate Phase Two of the Marvel plan, and what better movie to kick-start the next phase than Iron Man 3. With Iron Man 3 you get the action, you get the effects, you get plenty of laughs, and lots and lots of Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark doing what he does best: just being awesome for the sake of being awesome.

If you remove Iron Man 2 from the equation and substitute The Avengers as the sequel to Iron Man, it actually elevates the Iron Man franchise. It actually takes it from “the first one was great but the second one wasn’t” status to a pretty epic trilogy that encapsulates the entire Marvel universe. Watch Iron Man, then watch The Avengers, then see Iron Man 3 and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s like those people who say that The Dark Knight wasn’t needed and you can watch Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises back-to-back and its seamless. The same thing happens with the abovementioned Marvel movies. See for yourself!

Iron Man 3 is a solid, action-packed ride that gives us a Tony Stark that is a little more human, and a little more vulnerable, but no less the billionaire, playboy, philanthropist he’s always been. And these traits only make him all the more endearing and worth rooting for. We may not be Tony Stark, but we sure as hell want to be!

I really don’t want to spoil anything for you before you check out the movie. If you’ve seen the international trailer, you already know that you’re in for quite a wild and exciting time. And the trailer pales in comparison to the actual movie, and I really love the trailer for Iron Man 3!

So, what am I telling you to do? Go and see Iron Man 3! Liked the first one, didn’t like the sequel? Doesn’t matter. This makes up for it a hundred times over. Trust me. Iron Man 3 is awesome, it’s fantastic, it’s fun, and it’s totally worth seeing!

Iron Man 3 is in theaters May 3, 2013!
