Blu-ray Review: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

I remember first watching Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure as a kid. My dad brought it home from the video store that was next to the Chuck E. Cheese’s where we lived. At the time, films were on these ancient pieces of technology known as VHS tapes and we had to use a clunky machine called a VCR to play them.

This is what the VHS cover looked like…

This, of course, was also back in the day when you couldn’t buy any movie you wanted as soon as it came out on video. No, back then you had to wait for a VHS copy to be in the bargain bin at the video store or record it off them TV (also with your VCR). Those were the days.

When I first saw Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure I recall liking it a lot but not getting all the jokes or subtleties in the humor. Watching it years later on blu-ray has made me appreciate the film more and I definitely get all the jokes now!

Were Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan stoners or just morons? It’s hard to tell. My guess is that they were much like Harold and Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber; just two best friends that were too dumb for their own good at times. But there’s something endearing and very clever within the confines of the Bill and Ted universe that makes it a classic film worth watching over and over again.

For my money, one of the best scenes in the film takes place at the mall where Bill and Ted have dropped off almost all of the people they have met throughout history. It’s one of the most energetic moments in the film and also one the funniest and funnest!

Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and George Carlin shine in this awesome comedy/sci-fi flick that really is “most excellent.” The blu-ray edition special features include:

The Original Bill & Ted: In Conversation with Chris and Ed

An interview with screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon about how they came up with the concept for the film and its lasting impact.

Air Guitar Tutorial with Bjorn Turoque & The Rockness Monster

Join 2004 West Coast Air Guitar champion The Rockness Monster, and self-proclaimed “second best” air guitarist Bjorn Turoque as they teach you how to play the perfect air guitar.

One Sweet and Sour Chinese Adventure to Go

For some hilarious movie-watching fun, I highly recommend Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure on blu-ray! Unless you, too, have a copy of the VHS lying around and would prefer to watch that. Lol.
