Scooby-Doo: Laff-A-Lympics – Spooky Games – DVD Review

Let the games begin! It’s time for the Scooby Doobies, Yogi Yahooeys, and the Really Rottens to square off in a series of zany Olympic-style events that are anything but normal. And why should they be?

Utilizing 45 classic Hanna-Barbera characters, Laff-A-Lympics aired on ABC as part of a two-hour cartoon block from 1977 to 1978. The series was originally one of four (later reduced to 90-minutes for the 1978-1979 season), which included The Scooby-Doo Show, The Blue Falcon & Dyno-Mutt (not part of the 1978-1979 season), and Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels.

And while I’m most interested in Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels based on the title alone, Laff-A-Lympics is a lot of fun to watch and it’s great to see these classic characters together on the small screen. The casts of the three other series in the two-hour block are part of the Scooby Doobies, once of the three teams features on the show. It’s a zany, off-the-wall series done in a way only Hanna-Barbera could do, and there’s no shortage of puns, silliness, and slapstick.

The DVD set contains 13 world-hopping eps from the original series, and include an all-new episode, Scooby-Doo! Spooky Games. It’s pretty good, but there’s something about the originals that always makes them better.
