The Iron Lady – Blu-ray Review

Meryl Streep does it again! Is there no role this brilliantly talented actress can’t take on and knock out of the park? Streep’s ability to not only act a role but become a role is what has made her one of the best actresses of the 20th and 21st centuries, and there’s no sign of her slowing down anytime soon. You don’t nominated 18 times at the Academy Awards for Best Actress and win three of those times if you suck at what you do (that’s what the Razzies are for!).

The Iron Lady is a biopic about England’s first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. It’s an interesting and insightful look into the gender politics and other facets of British government that were both barriers and pathways for Thatcher when she first entered the political arena back in the 1970s. Streep does a wonderful job drawing us in and making us understand not just who this woman was but also why she made the decisions she often had to make despite criticism and derision.

Playing Thatcher’s husband is the brilliantly versatile Jim Broadbent, whom most people know from the Harry Potter series. His role as Denis Thatcher is cleverly understated but full of humor and warmth, which helps to offset Thatcher very serious and driven persona.

The Blu-ray contains many behind-the-scenes featurettes, which include:

Making The Iron Lady

Recreating the Young Margaret Thatcher

Denis: The Man Behind the Woman

Battle in the House of Commons

Costume Design: Pearls and Power Suits

While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, fans of Streep are in for a real treat as the Oscar winner once again takes viewers on a powerful and mesmerizing journey that they will not soon forget.

The Iron Lady is available NOW on Blu-ray and DVD!
