The Smurfs Holiday Celebration – DVD Review

Get ready for a Smurftastic Christmas! Celebrate the holiday season with everyone’s favorite little blue creatures, the Smurfs. Before the 2011 live-action/CG movie, The Smurfs was a staple of the NBC Saturday Morning Cartoon line-up back in the 1980s. Who can forget that memorable theme song? Here’s the opening theme:

Originally a comic strip from Belgian cartoonist Peyo, the adventures of the Smurfs quickly gained pop culture status around the world and they continue to delight and entertain audience to this day. Relive those childhood holiday memories once again with these two enjoyable Smurfs episodes that are sure to get you into the spirit of the season.

First up is The Smurfs Christmas Special that originally aired on NBC on December 12, 1982, which has the Smurfs helping tow lost children and trying to save themselves from the evils of Gargamel and a mysterious stranger. Will the Smurfs have a happy holiday, or has Gargamel ruined any chance of a truly Smurfy Christmas?

The second special, ‘Tis the Season to be Smurfy, aired on December 13, 1987 and finds the Smurfs helping a poor elderly couple celebrate the holidays. Will the Smurfs succeed in giving the old couple a Merry Christmas? Will the Smurfs learn anything about the true meaning of the season?

Both specials are lively and fun and keep with the themes and vibe of the long-running series. Even if you aren’t a fan of Christmas but enjoy The Smurfs, you will like these episodes. It’s a win-win, which is something the Smurfs would quickly embrace…well, maybe not Grouchy Smurf!
