What a refreshing and enjoyable movie! After a summer of aliens, robots, wizards, and superheroes, it was nice to finally see a well-acted, funny, and touching movie with actors acting and reacting to the CG around them. Crazy, Stupid, Love was surprisingly satisfying, and definitely worth seeing.
Written by Dan Fogelman, who is primarily known for scripting Disney animated films like Tangled, Bolt, and Cars, the film is a romantic-comedy and family drama rolled into one. And while there is an abundance of characters, sub-plots, and shifts in tone throughout, the story manages to keep every aspect in check, which enables simplicity within the complexity of the film’s many layers.
With a great story and hilarious and poignant dialogue, the film soars even higher with a superb and talented cast that takes the material and brings it to life. Just naming the cast is enough to entice most people into seeing it. Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Marisa Tomei, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, and Kevin Bacon are so excellently cast and work so well together that even when things trail into sitcom-level antics and shenanigans the actors pull it off with grace and style.
I was pleasantly surprised by how good Crazy, Stupid, Love is. The perfect chemistry between the actors is evident throughout, and Carell and Gosling make a great comic duo, and Tomei, Moore, and Stone bring plenty of funny and genuine emotion to the screen. This is good stuff.
I guess if I had to nitpick and choose one aspect of the film that I could have done without it would be the subplot involving the babysitter. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable and it was a tad awkward at times. While actress Analeigh Tipton does a great job in her role and is a great part of this talented ensemble, there were aspects of her storyline that were a little creepy. Overall, Crazy, Stupid, Love shines and makes for a great date movie. There’s a lot to like about this film and its cast, and it’s definitely worth checking out.
