Stan Lee’s Superhumans: Season One – DVD Review

The men and women showcased in Stan Lee’s Superhumans possess their own unique and at time disturbing qualities that would certainly make Professor X sit up and take notice (yes, I am aware he’s in a wheelchair, but still…). Why all of us have our own special talents, skills, and quirks that make us special, these particular people go one step further when it comes to distinguishing themselves from others in a crowd.

Each episode of the series, hosted comic book legend/God Stan Lee, explores the lives and talents of these “superhumans.” Now, these folks aren’t out using their abilities to fight crime or save the world from others with similar abilities, but they are able to do things that would otherwise kill or severely injure an average person.

At the top of each show we get a warning that attests to this fact: “What you are about to see is real,” it begins. “Some of the tests are extremely dangerous and could cause severe injury or death. Do not try these yourself.” And no, there is no Jackass-style logo at the top of the screen. But I’m pretty sure of Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, or Bam Magera tried some of these things they would not survive to laugh about it!

While Lee’s name is on the show, it’s Daniel Browning Smith, the world’s most flexible man, who tracks down and finds these special men and women that have truly special abilities. Smith travels the globe looking for superhumans like him who have a little something extra that makes them extraordinary human specimens. Some may call these people freaks of nature, others may call them mutants, but no matter what you call them they are truly in a class all their own.

Season One includes the following hour-long episodes: Electro Man; Killer Punch; Hammer Head; Human Speed Bump; Human Wolf; Human Crash Test Dummy; Rubber Band Man; Jaw Breaker; and Bonus Footage not seen on TV.

This is a fascinating series that at times can be hard to watch without cringing. But there are some really special, amazing, and, yes, crazy people profiled on this series that make you take a step back and appreciate the complexities of genetics and humans as a race of beings. I really enjoyed this series and look forward to future episodes.

Stan Lee’s Superhumans: Season One is available April 26, 2011 on DVD!
