We had the exciting opportunity to be in the audience at the Kids’ Choice Awards this year. It was a wild and crazy event held at USC’s Galen Center with plenty of celebrities, musical guests, and lots and lots of slime! Along with the festivities, we also got to see what happened when the cameras stopped rolling and you were watching commercials.
If you watched the show, which was hosted by Jack Black, you saw kids in the audience near the stage, celebs like Snoop Dogg, Heidi Klum, and host Jack Black get slimed throughout the show. But what you missed was the aftermath that had to be quickly cleaned up during each commercial break.
When they went to commercial, dozens of stagehands and other crew invaded the stage with towels and squeegees to get the slime off the stage as fast as possible. This was the easy part. The challenge was keeping the talent and crew from slipping and falling on the slick wet floor caused by the slime.
It soon became a suspenseful game to see who would fall; luckily, no presenters of award recipients fell, although Heidi Klum slipped as she came out to present with Nick Cannon.
Some the crew wasn’t as lucky and they did slip and fall off-camera while the show was going on. Jack Black makes reference to this at one point during one of his intros. The good thing was that no one got hurt and the show went on with no issues.
It was an exciting event and it was cool to see celebrities in person like Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake, Steven Tyler, Will Smith, Miley Cyrus, and Josh Duhamel. It was also cool to see the Black Eyed Peas, Big Time Rush, and Willow Smith perform live as opposed to just watching them on TV. It really was like seeing several mini-concerts at once.
I was hoping that Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears would also be performing, but Bieber and Perry won awards that were not presented, and Britney had a brief cameo in a Kung-Fu Panda sketch.
We had a lot of fun at the Kids’ Choice Awards and look forward to going next year and bringing you coverage from the Orange Carpet!
